where I'm from.

I'm from free stickers
On both sides of the kitchen door.
from Neosporin and Band-Aids.
I'm from the grains of sand that stick between floorboards.
Tracked in by a dozen bare feet
I am from the lilacs,
From green and purple basil
Who’s rich scent filled the salty air
I am from the year-long Christmas tree in the front yard
and baby teeth that never fall out,
I'm from the Yinglings and from my mama's side too
from the hard workers and the good liars.
From" life isn’t fair,"
and "be nice to your sisters"
I am from pasta every single Monday.
Through sickness and health.
I'm from my little house
that kept getting bigger
with pizza money every year
The small blue room, first right, second floor.
the very spot that I was born.
I am from sweet apple pie,
and sharp cheddar cheese.
From the Uncle who went to clown school
the aunt who went to law school
and the father who sold pizzas out of the back of a truck
I'm from "there’s no biz like dough biz"
from dusty photo albums and journal entries
that can never be found when you’re looking
who’s semblance causes laughter
and secrets cause tears.
I’m from all the right love shown in all the wrong ways
from “nobody’s perfect”
from “family sticks together.”
from “wherever you go, I go”
from my mama.
