Beyond the dawn by Omisanjo Sakiru.
Another day is approaching,
bringing with mixed melodies of
hope and great expectations.
like other days;
the birds are singing the dawn
chorus
with new-found eagerness
to herald the birth of the new day
like other days;
mother is pounding yam to sell
with every sinew she has
to give it its traditional finess.
like other days;
I can hear the bus conductors
with their guttural voices
soaked in the early morning rush
looking around,
I see how we all struggle to
meet the day's demands
but when will it meet our's?
is today or another'
I ask?
When will our sadness wash
away?
When will our stoical smile turn
genuine?
When are we shedding this
garment of want?
Is it today or another'
I ask?
What lies beyond the dawn for
us?
