I remember when I told her
And asked her to be mine
With such high reaching courage as
I’d never plucked before

Her eyes grew wide with innocence
The blush spread on her cheeks
But the words that came forth from her lips
My heart they ripped from me

Of course I stayed – how could I not?
My heart belongs to her
And I could never bear to lose
The presence of her smile

Just so she isn’t scared away
I choose my words with care
Unable to say just how much
I need her to be near

What pains my bleeding heart endures
Oh, what great throes of hurt!
Minute after minute, day after day
At every embrace and slightest touch

What agony the heart can feel
Trapped in this cage of thorns
The curse of love never returned
A hopeless need unmet.
