Subcutaneous Sunset Secrets

in poetry •  7 years ago

This is what I knew
I knew that the sky was gold, again
and that devouring it, I felt like a god
I knew that fresh air and movement were ambrosia
and as I walked, my soul feasted
I knew that I was in trouble
and there was no statute of limitations
on crimes you commit against yourself
I knew that the fortune in my pocket was true:
“You will feel better when your slate is clean”
I pondered this truth until I threw up what felt like shards of broken glass
But I knew that it was not

I knew that you could never touch a sunset
but that evening I came so close,
my fingertips ached
and from the miniature mouth
of the doomed demigod
inside and underneath,
I knew
a first sigh escaped
