The Collector

View-Loneliness-A-Man-An-Island-Sea-Peace-Water-2915187 (1).jpg

The obsession began, outside a trellised cafe for a cherubic but neglected child, his parents, too engrossed with each other to notice his obvious lack. His mother’s swollen mid-section foreshadowed he’d soon grow a little lonelier.

A waiter noticed the child’s expanding isolation. Boredom to disconnect was often tragic. What could he give to salve the situation? He offered a string, strung with discarded bottle caps. In the hands of the child, trash transformed to treasure.

The cherubic, but neglected child gained his first collection.

He moved on from there to seashells and then tinker cars. When he entered school, it was a natural evolution to collect some of the other children. Friends a misnomer, he lined them up and played them off. Those that refused to be selected found themselves shunned to social Siberia.

Angelic cheeks hardened to chiseled features. The child grew to see himself a leader of men, a lover of women. As long as he had his collections, he had proof he belonged; he had proof he existed.

Powerful stuff, Pryde :))

Thank you, Ray:)

I don't know if he rose above his childhood, but at least he wasn't a serial abductor :)

There is that ... it was not that kind of moral:)

I knew someone like that. Nicely done.

I think we all know some people like this. It is a common pattern in humanity.

Such a good read. I think most of what we are doing in the present as adults came from what we did when we were still children.

We are now based on what came before. So true. Glad you enjoyed:)

Rather sad read… the waiter’s gesture of kindness led to a personality of acquisition and imposition, instead of to more kindness.

The waiter was limited in his ability to help the child, but an attachment to material things acts the salve for many. What the boy needed was attention and guidance. In out world, these things can be hard to come by.

A good action in a child can be the difference for a promising future.

True:)

childhood is where we all develop our personalities. Good poem dear

Thank you, Sayee:)

Sounds like a pretty messed up childhood had an impression on the adult. Shame. "Adults can rise above their raising" as Oprah once said.
This person obviously missed that show?
Sounds like an existentialist crisis is about to happen to this character. Might be a good idea?
Interesting.

Perhaps we all need a good existential crisis from time to time. They are a gift in a way. I am thankful for mine:) Stay tuned:):):)

It's always a good idea to check in on our existence from time to time :)

Potent write here -- I very much am resonating with this vibe today and in a way, my way, I penned something similar, yet quite different.

Thank you, Mamadini. Are you referring to your write tonight. I read and yes, it resonated with me too:)

Yes, I kept editing it once it was up as I was so late posting after such a busy day. In a way, editing once something is live feels more exciting to me.

Thank you. :)

I usually have to add some edits after posting too:) You can't get a real look until you hav published it:) I think too once this all done, I may collect all the poems and publish them. So I will do even more editing:)

Agreed. That is my plan also. It would be cool to see more collected works in a published cohesive form from this challenge also.

Maybe an anthology could be put together:) The proceeds could go to charity. I think Daniel is over-worked right now but we could run it by him when all is said and done. Maybe ask everyone to donate one poem.

Oh my, I LOVE that idea. I agree, Daniel has enough currently, lets keep this flame lit and bring it to him after. ;)

Agreed:)

good luck friend, I always have in your comments, hope it could be for your good, please support my post yes

i'm resteem it.
