Unhappy Avatars

born free
of worry and fear
told we have free will
and should feel guilty
for being bad children

we learned
the will of others
certain others
should be followed
if we want acceptance
if we want security

fit in, belong
fit in, belong
if you don't want
to be thrown away

security and acceptance
feel good
so we became less free
it’s a trade
all but the criminal make

fake it and fool
fake it and fool
if you don't want
to be locked up

then we learnt security
was only ever a mirage

acceptance …
highly conditional
there one day, gone the next

the goodwill of others
fickle and waning
like a shadow
dancing on the rim
of a paper coffee cup
so we dove in

drink up and suck up
pray the caffeine stays plenty
pray our mirrored and smoky companions
hate the same things, suffer in similar ways

together we hold hands
though life’s drudgery
but don’t squeeze too tight
no one likes a clinger

together ...
we can insist
conditions change

fill it to the brim
fill it to the brim
if you want
to be worshipped

holdback on happiness
until demands are met
remain, unhappy avatars

Wow you nailed the illusions good and proper.
Crime doesn't pay? Check any 'successful' person and you'll find a trail of theft.
Trump
Branson
Any Royal
I could go on but you know already.

Thank you, Molometer.

I hold to the ideal that a truly successful person lifts up everyone around them and even those they may never have met. I would cite someone like Oprah Winfrey as successful. I really don't know much about Branson and I think the royals may be rich, but they are also colossal victims of circumstance. They are not free to discover themselves. Likewise, I would not trade places with Trump for all the money in the world.

Oprah is a good role model for sure and a rising tide lifts all boats.

The royals are completely free and can always walk away like King Edward did, but why would they walk away from a life of luxury and privilege? Some victim lol

It's hard to say. I just know I wouldn't change places with them. I do believe when all is said and done ... they are an anachronism but they do provide some cohesion for the common-wealth. Either way, I am not a fan of caste-systems.

Those last three lines are so strong, they feel like a complete diagnosis of the modern human condition. This "should feel guilty / for being bad children" in the first stanza struck me also, especially as a response to the idea of free will. It's true, much of this freedom is lost or traded in as we move through life. Very nice poeticising Pryde :)

I agree ... the more I have come to understand, the more I have come to understand that we have very little free will ... which makes compassion they only rationale choice.

success often does not go hand in hand with happiness. Contentment is the only thing which will ensure true happiness. Desires only increase the fire which keeps burning and man is not satisfied. Great work

Thank you, Sayee:) Success is found in the moment with contentment. I agree:)

oh the conditioning we are put through, the power we lose and hand over, so easy to lose ourselves. Really great poem @prydefoltz. Congrats on making it to day 50, here's to 50 more x

Thank you, Trucklife. Yes half way there:) It is an accomplishment in itself:) Congrats to you as well:)

We give our power for acceptance and security. We become "adapted children" and stop pursuing our dreams and happiness.

The thing is ... happiness needs no pursuing, just discovering:)

I remember that avatar is very nice
