A Poem - The sheer depression of modern life

in poetry •  5 years ago

As a surplus citizen I often find life depressing
Degree educated in biochemisty
But not needed or wanted for any job
Outnumbered
By cheaper better joobies and employees
That can be shipped in from abroad
No opportunities or training for the native populations
Constantly told about my white privilege
My patriarchy
How its time for me to sit down and shut up
When I never got to stand in the first place
It's such a disgrace
So many people I know
Living in a black hole
Nowhere to go
Nothing to do
When society wants anyone but you
Maybe its the failure of capitalism
Or a meaning crisis causing this schism

I get off watching the world burn
Hoping after the ashes maybe it will be my turn
They never liked us anyway
Fuck their suffering
Kill a middle class then hit the gas
They made us a killer
Carrying knives
It's our lives
Our honour
Our way to obtain resources
They shut us out
And they wonder what it is all about
When we explode in their streets
Beyond peak frustration
In their capitalist centres
Carved up by cold glaciation
Bombarded with advertisements for things we can't afford
An alien life far across a beautiful fjord

As our numbers rise
The normies become the "other"
Building schools with bullet proof cover
Living in fear of the ocean waves
Pulled by gravity and smashed against the rocks
Eroding the land
The tinder box which is inequality
Ready to blow
Ready to boom
Volcanoes erupting globally
Seen across different movements
With people out to burn
Everything
To the ground
Just to feel something
Anything!
To overcome,
If just for a moment,
The sheer depression of modern life
