in poetry •  7 years ago

Next up in the potentially epic poem-off:

This is a one of my poems from "the early years," aka high school and earlier. Reaching way back to counter or complement @mitchelljaworski's poem, Far Away - Read it here!

Mirror

I had suffered through the pain,
And all those years were forgotten
In that moment that I found you.

I see you there,
A reflection of myself
And I try to set you free.

This one-way mirror
Is so confining,
I cannot help but cry.

I hear your calls,
My heart is torn!
I want so much to free you.

But here I'm trapped,
So far away
Please know I will not leave you.

You reach to me,
And I to you,
But this thin, cursed glass
Stands still,
So strong,
Between us.

What's a poem-off, you ask? Just a little thang that started a little bit ago. I read a poem that @mitchelljaworski posted, from his old-school writing days. It reminded me of all of my old-school poems, so I challenged him to see if we could go turn-for-turn and repost long lost words from the vaults of time. No rules apply, and new stuff might just make the mix. Check it out, y'all. Follow the links down the rabbit hole...

Thanks for visiting

A very insightful and well-written piece. We do see in those we love a reflection of our best parts. I quite liked this write, uniwhisp. I am very new to steemit. Count this as day two and I am hoping to make some poetry-type friends. I am used to being rather interactive on the other sites I have frequented. I am currently in the land of the little known and would love to build some community. I'd like to invite you visit my page and maybe leave me comment if you like. Perhaps we could be of regular support to each other on here. Let me know what you think? Pryde

Hey Pryde, thanks for visiting. There are great discord chat communities around steemit and several are writing-based. If you want a general community for getting to know steemit and the folks around it, check out PAL. Two writing communities that are very helpful are The Isle of Write and The Writers' Block. They're all full of great people and helpful resources. Welcome and I'll see you around!

Thanks for the guidance, uniwhisp. Everyone has been so helpful that way. Have a great night.

Very nice poem @uniwhisp.

Thank you

Beautiful!!

Thanks, Simgirl!

it's like rereading a much better version of my high school poetry - why are introspective mirrors so omnipresent for that period of writing life for so many writers?

what you did so well then, and is reflected as a foundational strength in your writings now, is your appeal to a variety of senses to absorb the reader into the moment.

thank you sharing, @uniwhisp, this is a fun read.

Thanks Carmalain, I'm glad you enjoyed. I suppose writers, by nature, are introspective. Actually, probably most artists are, whatever the medium. And if not introspective, then at least hyper-observant of the world.

I do like to appeal to all the senses when I write. If you're going to engage, why not do it completely? See you soon...

From what I can gather from the prose this is a young you experiencing existentialism. Staring at yourself so close but far in terms of figuring things out about your life and yourself. Well if its worth anything the prose got me pondering which is always a good sign.

Yay! That is one of the best complements - that it got you pondering. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts on it with me. I love hearing how my writings come across to others. <3 See you soon!
