Poker Boot Camp
Maybe you all have discussed this in the past.
Maybe not.
BUT even if you have, I'll say that you need to hear it again, because FUCK some of you are bad.
Not like, "Oops, I got a little too drunk/high and decided to donk off after 5 hours of glorious free-roll action on Steem Poker League."
More like, "Oops, I accidentally lost 11 chromosomes on the way to the game, and I think a huffing cooking spray may be a good idea."
This advice is I'm about to give you is solid. So reliable that when discussing that I was going to write on this topic my friend said, "don't help the fish get better. I love their money."
I'm going to let you chromosome challenged bums, know that you are extremely over-valuing your hands.
I see people willing to shove all-in on the flop (or pre-flop for that matter) with a low-pair.
I hope this is not because you think that your pair of 4's is going to go the distance.
I pray it's because you don't know the odds that your hand is going to improve and expect a 4 on the turn or the river.
So let's talk about that because I want my Steem Poker League homies to prosper.
Outs 101
I could give you some fancy schmancy definition of outs. Instead, I'll break it down in a way you soft-skulled twats can understand:
Outs is the number of possible cards left that will improve your hand.
Pretty basic, right?
Let's give some examples:
Let's say you have a pocket pair of 4s.
How many possible cards are in the deck that can improve your 4s?
If you answered anything other than 2, you're an idiot and probably need a reference while you play cards. So I made you this.
After you finish upvoting, resteeming, and worshiping this post (making me very rich and declaring allegiance to I, @kryptik as King of the Internet helping SPL to continue to hand out free magic internet money), make sure to stare at it as you play. Think about the repercussions before you push half of your stack for an 8% chance of success.
For the people that will inevitably forget this advice or are like, "@kryptik, dude, I already know this shit", I offer up another piece of rare poker wisdom.
The Rule of 4 & 2:
To determine the approximate odds of making a better hand multiply your outs by 4 for the turn and 2 for the river.
(Number of Outs) X 4 = approximate chance of making hand on the turn.
(Number of Outs) X 2 = approximate chance of making hand by river.)
Example: If you have 4 outs. (Two pair or Open ended straight draw)
(4)X 4 = 16% chance by the turn.
(4)X 2 = 8% chance by the river.

This is good information for those that don't know how to play or are new to the game. Another tidbit of information is that you have to reduce your playable hand range when the blinds get high, when I first started playing about 15 years ago I'd generally do well in the beginning of the tournament, then I'd lose quickly right around the time the blinds start getting big because I was playing the same way and calling with marginal hands that aren't good if they don't hit a good flop.

Definitely some crazy donks in the @spl. The regulars who are usually busted out of the tournament in 5 or 10 minutes. I'm not sure if they are into reading so who knows if this post will help them. Oh well @kryptik, you tried.

Lol man it’s nuts.
I’ll have to admit I’m awful at getting distracted by other things while I play at home but they limp and call with anything.

I can't wait to make myself an introduceyourself post so I can make an account there and be the douchebag player who doesn't understand poker but plays anyway.
EDIT: I'll try reading this post again for 5-10 times before really playing.

A good way to visualize poker statistics is you want to be the casino. The casino designs games to always have a statistical advantage for a reason. They don’t like getting lucky, they like making money.

But without variance we wouldn’t get advantages so easily! So every time I have a bad beat I get a little anticipatorally happy 😃

Sure, counting outs for good hands is great, but what about outs on making a pair with pocket 7 2 unsuited?

Well I would guess since you know that 72o is the worst hand in poker, that you know better than to play bad hands like that.
I’ll be contributing more to this series and I’ll discuss the basics of playing a TAG style.
Let me humor you and do the math:
Your approximate odds of hitting the a pair by the turn with 72o would be figured out like this:
You have 6 outs to make a pair.
(6) X 4 = 24%
And the river:
(6) X 2 = 12%
