In the wee hours of yesterday morning, I posted this question about a scenario involving the police. This morning, I saw a Huffington Post article on a recent Trump speech where he said he doesn't want police to be "too nice" to suspects they arrest.
I know the HuffPo is wildly inconsistent on matters of personal liberty, but in this instance, they are quite right to condemn Trump's rhetoric. WTF, conservatives? Why does the freakin' HuffPo need to remind people that "innocent until proven guilty" is a principle that matters? Of course laws should be stacked against cops. They bear the burden of proof. That's what justice is about. That is why abuse of suspects is always wrong.
Trump's casual disregard for liberty and insistence on ensuring "law enforcement" is above question is dangerous. Of course, he's hardly the only politician with these views, and his party is hardly unique, but this principle of "guilty until proven innocent" is a cancer in our society. So is the belief that, "Well, it was against the law, so the guy deserves what he got."
If there is no victim, there is no crime. If there is a victim, justice demands restitution or retribution unless the injured party chooses mercy. The government justice system is a counterfeit through and through, so it should come as no surprise that it justifies corruption and abuse as it flounders about failing to provide justice, and instead dispensing injustice as a matter if course.
And this is a perfect example of why Trump is not my president.

3 minutes of your for related news just shown today, great connection with Freddie Gray
I wish people would take what the U.S. President is saying more serious, or just he would take himself more serious and respect human life.

Trump has little idea of how regular people live. He just wants the police to protect people like him from the rest of us. It seems at least some police disagree.
Trump is confirming what I've thought of him for some time.

Innocent until proven guilty. It's one of the most powerful principles in our democracy. Sadly, it's being trampled on by the powerful and those who think they may one day be powerful - ie our masses of "temporarily embarrassed millionaires".

It's a very weak principle, and democracy is its greatest threat. Popular opinion is easily swayed by corrupt politicians, after all.

Please consider the context. Please do not take quotes out of context. Please remember that Chicago is a symptom of something bad happening. Please look at what has been happening in the USA since about 2009 until 2017, this year, now, these past eight years, and look at the patterns and compare the last eight years with the previous two hundred years or so...... ask yourself why things got worse and why and how things got worse.............

The context is Trump saying abuse of suspects is acceptable if the cops think the suspect is guilty.
Chicago is a mess because cops violently enforce bad laws and the corrupt politicians have plundered whatever they haven't monopolized or cartelized through their cronies.

@jacobtothe, you are wrong. You do not even know what is happening. That is not what Trump said. You do not even know what Trump said and is doing. You do not even know why Chicago is the way it is. You are so ignorant and arrogant and you do not even care. You will continue to call me a liar because you live in darkness.

When there is a problem, and two individuals disagree on both cause and cure, how is it rational for one to accuse the other of ignorance and lack of concern?
Chicago has a high crime rate. That is fact.
People choose actions based on incentives. That is also fact.
The question: What causes the crime rate? What are the incentives that reward criminal activity so much? Why is the risk so low for crime, and the reward too low for honest work?
Taxes, regulations, a disarmed populace, a corrupt police system, a dysfunctional court system, and a broken education system are far more likely causes than, "The cops aren't getting tough enough."

Chicago has higher gun regulation. Therefore, why does it have more crime?

Because depriving people of the means to self-defense and giving police more power to plunder is diametrically opposed to peace, prosperity, and liberty.

Higher gun regulation is exactly the crux of the issue. It may be cliche, but the fact of the matter is "If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns". Chicago and Washington DC have the same problem. Draconian gun laws and high crime. It's all about incentives and deterrence.

why don't you post a video too ? I tell you why. Because you are taking this out of context. He even gave an example, "you don't have to be too nice to someone who just killed somebody and cover his head when you force him into the car" (paraphrased, meaning is the same).. He wasn't talking about a potential suspect that is being interrogated but for people who commited a beyond any doubt crime.. Personally, I disagree with this statement by Trump but again, you are out of context.
TLDR: Fake News

"Innocent until proven guilty" means something. That matters. Police are wrong far, far too often.
