Libertarians have opinions, but don’t want to force them on other people and/or get involved in politics. They end up being ruled by people they disagree with, who are willing to be involved in politics.
Progressives have opinions, but aren’t willing to accept that other people sometimes disagree with those opinions. They then get involved in politics to force people to accept their ideas, against their will.
The literal definition of a libertarian is someone who just wants to be left alone, and doesn’t want to tell other people how to live. This puts them at a distinct disadvantage in both culture wars and electoral politics.
The literal definition of a progressive is someone who thinks they can plan an ideal society from the top down, and tell other people how to live. This gives them a distinct advantage in both culture wars and electoral politics.
