The petit bourgeoisie are between the workers and the most powerful capitalist. Like workers they must use their own labor to survive, but like the ruling class they also take resources from workers. They are told the ruling class is the definition of strength and the workers lazy and weak, otherwise how else could they have any sort of moral justification for anything that happens.
When capitalism starts decaying the petit bourgeoisie see their position in society slipping away. The only way to feel better about themselves is to separate themselves socially from what they consider "weakness". Since people who are different are discriminated against, they often become working class. Since the working class are also discriminated against they often band together.
