"The Last Jedi" and the Politicization of Storytelling

I agree with many of the points that this article makes but I was able to enjoy the movie nonetheless. I didn't think the politics really smacked you in the face. Then again, I'm a sucker for anything Star Wars and they would have to screw it up pretty bad for me not to watch. This doesn't bode well for the future though.

As far as character diversity goes, I did feel that Rose's character seemed to be somewhat of a token character. I really liked the character but she just wasn't important to the plot. Maybe she'll be more important in the next episode.

This is not to suggest that using art to make a socio-political point is necessarily bad, only when those points become detrimental to art itself. When the driving impulse is, “Use the story to serve these agendas,” when politics dictates how our stories are told and eclipses universal truths about the human experience — the deeper things that actually touch us — the result is an artistically diminished product.

I liked the movie.. but everything is very sensitive... now they have to be careful and diversity theirs characters or the news will be about that not about the movie and the great job they did.. ugh!
