While I'm very sympathetic to those who are impoverished everywhere, and I support reasonable immigration from other countries, the current policies aren't about either one. Latin America has been a mess for decades, despite the fact that American factories have been moving there the whole time (I had a relative whose job involved sometimes visiting an America factory South America in the early 1980's, and the company next-door to his moved its factory operations to Mexico around the same time ) and there's apparently no interest in fixing what's wrong with those countries.
Illegal immigration as it is is organized crime, and causes all the problems that organized crime does. There's a whole host of problems that are just being swept under the rug. The current policies are really just about giving more wealth and power to the elites of the world.
In the case highlighted below, San Francisco has agreed to pay an illegal immigrant $190,000 after he sued because city police turned him in to ICE after he showed up at the police station to pick up his car that had been stolen.
