The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, will exercise his third consecutive term in office after the broad victory won in the general elections held on Sunday in the Central European country.
His party, the nationalist conservative Fidesz, won almost half of the votes (48.9%) according to 95% of ballots counted.
It is estimated that participation was almost 70%.
With these data, Fidesz not only improves its data from the 2014 elections, but also maintain its two-thirds majority in Parliament.
Orbán confirmed his triumph before his followers in Budapest, and said that the result is a "great victory for Hungary, which will now be able to continue on its way started, in order to defend the country."
Orbán, 54, had focused his election campaign on a single message: to protect Hungary from immigration and refugees, defending the country's borders and blocking the entry of Muslim citizens.
Against immigration
There was little doubt that Fidesz would win the elections, but it was unclear whether he would succeed in repeating his "supermajority" in Parliament that allowed him to pass controversial laws in the past that put pressure on the judiciary and the press.
Thousands of followers of Orbán celebrated his wide victory in the elections, where he obtained almost half of the votes. AFP
The latest results, however, confirm that Orbán obtained the 134 necessary seats to continue having the dominance of the Chamber.
The nationalist party Jobbik (before ultra-rightist tendency), with 20% of the votes, and the left-wing coalition led by the Social Democrats, with 12%.
The leader of Jobbik, Gabor Vona, announced that he resigns from his position after knowing the results of this Sunday.
Orbán, a declared Eurosceptic, will probably take advantage of the results to claim his confrontations with the European Union for his harsh measures against immigration and his outright rejection of the refugee quota distribution program.
During his campaign, Orbán refused to debate publicly with his opponents or speak with independent media.
His political meetings before thousands of followers always had a central theme: stop immigration.
Under his rule, Hungary built a fence along its borders with Serbia and Croatia in 2015 to stop illegal immigration.
