Controversy Creates Coverage--and Chaos

Trump is not a normal President. Let's just be honest. Sure, there have been some... eclectic Presidents in our history. Andrew Jackson once beat up an assassin with his cane at a dinner party. Teddy Roosevelt never let go of his childhood dream of becoming a cowboy-soldier (a dream he undoubtedly fulfilled). And even Presidential elections have often been less than savory. In the 1800 election Thomas Jefferson called John Adams, "a blind, bald, crippled, toothless man who is a hideous hermaphroditic character with neither the force and fitness of a man, nor the gentleness and sensibility of a woman." And Adams responded calling Jefferson, "a mean-spirited, low-lived fellow, the son of a half-breed Indian squaw, sired by a Virginia mulatto father."


Still, regardless of what these next 4 (or 8) years have in store, Trump will forever hold an important place in our history, and a notable departure from the past. Barring the founders and Grant, the vast majority of Presidents have been relatively unaccomplished men, people who would have been quickly forgotten by history were it not for the fact they became President (and some still forgotten, anyway). But Trump is different. History would have remembered him (fondly or otherwise) even if he never sought the highest office in the land. Even the way Trump won is a departure from the norm. He joins the list of only a handful of Presidents who have won the Electoral College and lost the popular vote, and blows the others out of the water in terms of amount of popular votes he lost by. And certainly no President has ever endured as much controversy as Trump. 


However, the reaction to Trump's abnormality has not been that of a detached historian or a curious political scientist. No, the reaction to Trump has been filled with far greater emotion than that. People are afraid. Anxious. Angry. One need only take a stroll down 5th Avenue in the days following the election to see that--the plethora of protestors which filled the streets, many carrying signs expressing the sentiment that Trump is "not my President." So let's take a deeper dive into why Trump is so controversial, and the role we all have played in creating him.

There is one more cognitive bias not mentioned in the video I feel will play an important role in Trump's Presidency: the peak-end rule. This is our tendency to judge experiences on their peak, and how they end, rather than the total sum or average of every moment. Pertaining to Trump, the greatest accomplishments of his Presidency, and how it ends will matter more in our minds than the current chaos and media hysteria. I hesitate to guess what these next four years have in store, but suffice it to say this is a unique moment in our history, and one that will be studied for decades to come.

Welcome Gray! So glad you could join our community and I think you knocked it out of the park with your first post. I love how you summarized the content and gave us some "bonus facts" beyond what's in the video. Not just a great post, but a good model to follow as well.

I agree, that's one of the nice things about the platform, you get to flex some other muscles and present the information in multiple ways

An interesting little side note: Adams and Jefferson later renewed their friendship, wrote letters back and forth in their old age, and then died on the same day within five hours of each other, July 4, 1826.

the fear anxiety etc people are feeling is fed by media hyped nonsense.
turn off the tv and forget about the election.
We've become a nation of crybabies needing our safe places to hide in.
We've gone over the cliff of pathetic childishness and are rapidly falling into the chasm of identity politics based chaos. Not E Pluribus Unum anymore, simply Pluribus.
Those nutcases are feeling this way because they don't know how to move on.

Facts are problematic. Like the fact that our government legalized propaganda use on its own citizens only a year ago (ironically before this presidential election).

Trump is anti-NWO (thus anti-slavery)...and the corporate media are attacking him like their elite daddies tell them to. Hint...if I think voting for someone the media hates is a bad thing...i might be a "Propaganda Eater" ;)

I actually think trump might be the real deal. Ill wait and see though.

So great to see you on here - I have been watching your videos for a while. I love your balanced and well reasoned handling of issues:)

You are entering the Steemit platform with a bang as well! Welcome aboard and thank you for sharing your opinions and information about Trump's presidency.

Very deeply anchored inside my soul is the feeling that what we see happening right now with Trumps and its administration is a demonstration of brut force. Meanwhile, as you underlined so well, panic, fear, anxiety issues as per expected in the masses. Such exposure given to the media and shared by the media brings about something very special in our human history. We now have the capability to follow "live" the emotional effects of the masses thought the mass media giant Facebook for instance. This way, the powers that are at the helm perfectly know what is apparently accepted, barely tolerated or simply out right unforgivable. as a president, being fed the information on the situation give him and its administration the power to slowly push the envelop.

Like frogs, humans tends to jump right off board if they jumped into hot water. But if the waters are slowly brought up in temperature, they are lulled into oblivion... Let's see how many it will take for us to wake up and create the change necessary to prevent this from happening, there's too much at stake here to act without vigilance, as it has been the case for way to long already. If we follow the numbers, it takes about 5 to 7 percent of a population to create the change needed for a society to follow and, in this case of herd mentality, this is a rare, but none the less, healthy and necessary moment in our history.

I fully agree and that has been key to his ramp-up. Why to fool ourselves? Today`s politicians are nothing more than over-exposed ego-centric super-stars (with very few exceptions). Show masters. Yellow press fillers.

Agreed, there's little doubt Donald Trump is the most unusual President we have had; the next 4/8 years will definitely be interesting to watch. A lot of people DO have concerns and anxieties... I worry less about his political machinations than about his personality; he seems to have a short span of attention (ADHD-ish) and I find myself wondering how that's going to play, in the longer term.

Anyway, great starting article!

Let us all just hope that Trump does some good for the U.S.A. as the country definitely needs a morale boost. Needs to focus on itself without harassing others.
