Trump Says He Wants Drug Dealers To Face The Death Penalty

in politics •  7 years ago

Earlier this week, it was reported that Donald Trump was in favor of giving drug dealers the death penalty, in response to the very serious opiate addiction problem in the United States. In an interview with Axios last week, an anonymous source close to Trump said that he was in favor of the approach that governments in the Philippines and Singapore have taken in the drug war.

“He says, ‘When I ask the prime minister of Singapore do they have a drug problem [the prime minister replies,] ‘No. Death penalty’. He often jokes about killing drug dealers… He’ll say, ‘You know the Chinese and Filipinos don’t have a drug problem. They just kill them,” the source told Axios.

Because of the fact that there were no official sources, the severity of Trump’s comments were disregarded by many, but just days later, Trump gave a speech at the White House where he confirmed these accusations, saying that drug dealers should face “the ultimate penalty.”

In the speech, Trump first called for legal penalties against drug manufacturers.

“The administration is going to be rolling out policy over the next three weeks, and it will be very, very strong. I’ve also spoken with Jeff about bringing a lawsuit against some of these opioid companies. I mean, what they’re doing and the way — the distribution. And you have people that go to the hospital with a broken arm, and they come out and they’re addicted. They’re addicted to painkillers, and they don’t even know what happened. They go in for something minor, and they come out and they’re in serious shape,” Trump said.

Trump then went on to advocate the death penalty for what is essentially a nonviolent crime.

“Drugs are a similar but different problem, in the sense that we have pushers and we have drug dealers that don’t — I mean, they kill hundreds and hundreds of people, and most of them don’t even go to jail. You know, if you shoot one person, they give you life, they give you the death penalty. These people can kill 2,000, 3,000 people and nothing happens to them. And we need strength with respect to the pushers and to the drug dealers…..Some countries have a very, very tough penalty — the ultimate penalty. And, by the way, they have much less of a drug problem than we do. So we’re going to have to be very strong on penalties,” Trump continued.

Trump is very wrong on many points, firstly, as sad as it is, drug addicts make their own decisions, despite the many underlying societal and psychological factors that lead to drug abuse. People who do heroin know what they are getting into, especially now that news of overdoses and dirty batches are everywhere. Drug dealers are often blamed on the dirty batches, and while this is true, it is nearly impossible to track down who was actually responsible for cutting a drug with something dangerous. Furthermore, it is the prohibition of these drugs that are making them more dangerous, by forcing them into the black market where there is no quality control.

Also, Trump’s comments about the apparent success of draconian drug war policies are entirely false. As Reuters reported, after the death penalty for drug dealers was instituted in the Philippines, the price of heroin and crystal meth continued to drop, meaning that the streets were still being flooded with drugs. Politicians and law enforcement in the country continue to justify their crusade, saying that the thousands they kill will save millions of lives, despite the fact that they have not put a dent in the drug problem.

“There are thousands of people who are being killed, yes, but there are millions who live, see?” Albayalde, Metro Manila’s police chief told Reuters.

It is also important to mention that those arrested on drug trafficking charges are rarely ever the kingpins at the top, but mostly low-level dealers and users who get caught up in the middle.

It is striking to me that people read this article and still think that the death penalty for dealers is a good idea.

Prohibition is what causes the vast majority of the problems we see. People are not dying of heroin, they are dying of fentenyl which is only there because of the corruption of black markets.

Cracking down is not in anyone's best interest. The War on Drugs is a failure and is directly impacting you whether you are a drug user or not.

Yeah I was shocked to see many of the comments in here, and that is a very good point, even people who dont use drugs are affected by the black market crime, the loss of liberties and everything else that comes along with prohibition

I think he should be cracking down on satanic pedophiles that are running rampant in our own government. That ia what deserves the death penalty. Or start by cleaning up the thousands that are already on death row instead of us paying for them to feed the system for years by filing appeal after appeal. I agree with your article 100%.

The problem with laying waste to the death row inmates is that the State finds itself in error far too often for me. Within the last year or so there have been a good number of cases overturned due to mostly corruption, but also ineptness. Its a tough one. I don't want actual bad people among us either.

I think all drugs are not too harmful. some drugs like Marijuana can help for refreshment. some health expert and also psychologist says it can be take once in a week. it reduces the stress and also increase brain cells. and can also prevent cancer.

The death penalty for drug dealers?

Every time i think we have seen it all with Trump he goes and does something like this.

stop criminalising drugs and instead put the energy into actually helping the addicts.

I can't say that I would be opposed to the death penalty for pharmaceutical executives whose companies knowingly produce deadly drugs. Not to mention those drugs they sell that cause "suicidal thoughts and actions", actions like mass shootings.

that is an interesting angle lol I would have to think about that one

Interesting read. I wonder how this will turn out in America's case though. Thanks for the update.

I’m kind of appaled that some of you support this death penalty for drug dealers. I think that way bogus, next thing we will have is police executing people in the streets for giving someone an ibuprofen or something.

Thank god, he got something right!!! about the fact that drug dealers kill thousands of people.

I can't wait for more property seizures without even a charge, much less a conviction! I can't wait for this War on Drugs to turn even more violent as people feel they have no other options. I can't wait for neighborhoods to fully collapse under regimes of embattled "Peace Keepers" and drug lords. Good times.

I must say good decision by Trump. People who are involved in life threatening business must be handled in this way. By making a lot of people drug addicted they are killing the family. why not give them ultimate penalty and help to develop drug free society. keep sharing @johnvibes

Thanks for this post! I missed Trump's remarks; and, clearly msm hasn't thought enough to give it discussion.

Personally, that would be horrible. Yes, dealers destroy communities; but, they are a small piece of the bigger problem which is too lengthy for this post.

You summed up my belief in two points:

drug addicts make their own decisions

Yep. Most addicts thought it'd be cool to try that one-hit addiction. As sad as this is, crack and heroin are examples of one-time, all-time highs.

mostly low-level dealers and users who get caught up in the middle.

Yep, again. That's not to negate their destructive force. But, they exist because it simmers down to the crackdown, i.e. a 17-yo driving an Escalade, wearing a real Rolex, living in the 'hood', might be an indicator that the problem is bigger than the 17 yo.

I didn't listen to the speech; but, I'm clearly disturbed that the U.S. would go the way of countries that consider the firing squad the final say. It just pushes things under ground, as someone mentioned regarding the Prohibition era.

The solution is life w/o the possibility of parole, remanding all assets to recovery houses nationwide. This would be deterrent enough to get the attention of the next generation. But, to get arrested and back out in 90 days to resume biz as usual, is a revolving door, not a solution.

Typically, I don't get into discussions such as these; because, if a little ant like me can figure things out, I'm sure a colony making millions a year should be able to come up with an answer IF they really wanted to.

Again, thanks for the post!

Peace.

I never liked trump but I think this is a commendable effort. Let's see the action when he's done doing the talking.

Tobacco kills more people than every other drugs gathered and is perfectly legal.
