Watch 'Terrorist Propaganda' and Go to Jail

in politics •  6 years ago  (edited)

According to new laws in the U.K. as part of the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act, anyone who views "terrorist propaganda" could end up with a 15 year jail term. This has far-reaching human rights implications. The criminalization of viewing "information useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism" could mean just about anything.

A UN inspector has likened it to "thought crime", which is pretty accurate. The original proposal was for watching 'terror propaganda' "on three or more different occasions", but now it's just once. Some people are exempt though: journalists, academic researchers or people who had "no reason to believe" they were accessing terrorist propaganda are exempt. anyone else though, you're not allowed to view anything that's deemed "terror propaganda".

The Joint Committee on Human Rights said it's "breach of the right to receive information and risks criminalising legitimate research and curiosity". Officials say this law will be used for the good though, in cases "where other offences cannot be proven, or to prevent radicalisation." But can we take them at their word? I don't think so. There are other "exemptions including humanitarian work.. and funerals"

Security Minister Ben Wallace said:

"We are all struggling in the West to deal with the emerging threat of foreign fighters as failed state safe areas are becoming the routine. Members on both sides of the House rightly get angry when foreign fighters come back and we cannot prosecute them, because gathering evidence of deeper and more complex offences is very challenging."

Home secretary Sajid Javid said:

"Keeping people safe is my number one job and this important piece of legislation will help do that. The Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act gives the police the powers they need to disrupt plots and punish those who seek to do us harm."

I can see the reason for wanting to get at terrorists any way they can if they can't prove involvement. But these definitions are too loose. Anyone who is a dissenter could be targeted by Big Brother.

Here's a scenario:

"What's that? You don't like government? You're against government? You're an 'anarchist'? Hmmm... let's see what you've been watching. Oh, see that there, that's 'terrorist propaganda'! You're going to jail bitch! Winning!"

That's the dangerous road I see this heading towards. At first it starts with real terrorists. But then comes the gradualism and incrementalism of altering the agenda for the end-game for controlling dissent and free thought.

As Corey Stoughton, advocacy director at Liberty, said:

Despite a series of amendments brought about by concerted campaigning, this act remains a grave threat to our human rights. It unnecessarily adds to the raft of existing counterterror legislation, introducing harsh sentences for ill-defined offences related to travelling overseas and browsing the internet. It risks stifling dissent and making thought crime a reality.

This is dangerous legislation to pass. It's a weak tool to charge actual terrorists, and actually promotes the totalitarian authority of the state to control society further. 1984 was a blueprint, and we're living it.

This is insanity! I hadn't heard of this before, although the plight of folks in the UK hasn't slipped my mind.

England.jpg

The right of folks in England to defend themselves from violent crime was the initial excuse used to strip almost all of them of firearms. Instead of tackling criminals, they criminalized defending yourself.

Now they can't buy spoons. Now they seize butter knives, and scooters. Plastic toy guns.

The UK government claimed it needed to interfere with terrorist communications, and passed laws against their citizens free speech. Now if you call a transvestite a man, you go to jail. If you criticize the police you go to jail. If your dog does politically charged tricks, you go to jail.

This is not an exaggeration. You're not borrowing trouble for no reason. There is a very slippery slope in action here, and we can see that folks there are being increasingly subjected to a tyranny beggaring belief.

We can't stand up for the people of the UK, but we can sure note what's being done to them - and we'd damn well better make sure it doesn't happen here.

They can pry my spoon from my cold dead fingers.

Thanks!

Worse has already happened here.

I know. The litany of insult and injury to the people of the UK is far too substantial to include in one infographic. I sincerely wish you the best, and hope to be of any assistance I am able in your efforts to improve your circumstances.

Thanks!

I like the infographic. Massively tall but thin images somehow work with Steemit's upload system. 640p max width, but it can be super long! The way the feed scrolls down works nicely with graphics like that. I'm on a desktop so I prefer short fat images generally, but infographics are nice for scrolling through.

This is very disturbing but not surprising. The UK has become a real police state and Australia isn't far behind.
These sorts of laws are complete overkill and destroy the human rights of everybody.

Israel, which has a much more serious terrorist threat than the UK and has done a much better job at preventing terror, does not have these sorts of laws.

Ipso facto they are not necessary to be serious about stopping terrorism and are used by stupid and lazy legislators to substitute for the hard work of getting inside terrorist networks.

Wow, that is legendary.

That's like Patriot Act x10 right there.

Who decides what "terrorist propaganda" is?

This is just another way of them saying:

We will torture and enslave you for any reason we feel like.

Business as usual.

If people don't understand that they are being viewed and treated as chattel by their governments, If they are not woken up even a little by now by all of this, I don't know what will :(

Your anti-slavery and not-very-supportive-of-authority comment has been detected by the algorithms. Your social outcomes will be adjusted and your file category has been updated to "domestic shit disturber" with a known propensity for pointing out corruption and hypocrisy. You can edit or delete your comment but the blockchain never forgets a keystroke. ;)
And don't get paranoid about this, or you'll be flagged for harbouring suspicious thoughts about authority. :p

LMAO! You are the best 😆

I think you just vocalized what is probably going on. I think I'm screwed if they ever implement a social credit score haha. You are right the blockchain never forgets! 😋

I'm sorry authority overlords, please send me to re-education camp so that I can learn to love Government again! lol

And yet the ghosts continue to move about the matrix without a clue. The machine is simply making it safer for them to consume is the thought that will run through their heads as they look at you with fear if you bring this up to them. Waiting to get safely away from you so they can report your terrorist mind crime sharing.

Your acknowledgement of that fact has been detected by the algorithms and reported to the authorities. Everything you've ever done, said, or thought will soon be isolated from history and scrubbed from existence.

Terrorism is the marketing of the system!!!

At first it starts with real terrorists.

At first it starts with real terrorists mercenaries paid for by the governments who are then used to lever in draconian laws in the name of 'safety'.

...for the sake of clarity...(imo)

I have one of the vids if you want, I'll send it on Discord DM's. IIRC, it's the most intense video. Like with all serious extremist groups these days, one guy did lose his mind and plot to kill or plotted and killed some some wanker. (I disallow) :) srsly. They mostly did 60 second flashmob type asymmetric type stuff as a group. NA - National Action.

The UK already has a ton of street cams. I guess George Orwell's 1984 is the end goal?

This spam is courtesy of @fulltimegeek! A real piece of shit who flags manual curation projects like @themacurator because he's a spiteful cunt!!!

One day our descendant wil look back over these decades and just be flabbergasted - yet amused - of how the state used the fear of "terrorists" to control people's lives to the tiniest of details.
It's pretty much how we see nowadays the way the Church used christianity in a twisted way for political gains and influence during the Middle Ages.

Defending a free country be deciding to make it unfree is not a victory. It's unconditional surrender.

Despite historically strong traditions of decentralization of government, checks and balances, constitutionalism (in the USA) and a strong emphasis on rule of law, I'm baffled as to increasingly hear about this type of infringements on the basic principles on which societies are built in the Anglosphere. Am I not understanding something about English Common Law? Is there such a reliance on the judicial system as a branch of government to uphold the rule of law according to tradition that law-making can be allowed to be this weak?

It's been in effect for sometime now. I have a big time video from Nation Action. They were dubbed a Terrorist Org around a year ago or more and can't post even with a disclaimer to Bitchute. It get's taken down. IIRC, all their videos were just flashmobs with pretty standard 'Neo-Nazi" Nativist Fair. No calls for violence. In the vid I have they announced they were coming. There is protest, counter-protest and Police Clashes with both sides.

Like I said, it's the most intense one, my video. Can upload to Discord if you want, to your Discord DM's if your's not British if you want a better idea.

Cheers!

So... If someone posts an anti-statist meme in a Facebook group, and you see it as part of your feed?

This is beyond character assassination..

NO information should be forbidden knowledge that only elites and law enforcement can access. Just a recipe for further rapid societal decay. We must have access to all information, even that deemed dangerous or 'false' by the state.

That’s for sure thought police! Losing control of the population? Legislate some disgusting ‘laws’ aimed at control and see it spiral further out of control.
