Ahok and al-Ma'idah 51; a problem of language and subterfuge

in politics •  8 years ago  (edited)

Anyone with a good understanding of Indonesian, and who understands a passive sentence, will realize by watching the full video of Ahok's speech (which I do, I can and I have) that Ahok did NOT insult the Koran, Muslim leaders, Muhammad SWT and Islam. Anyone who says otherwise is an ignorant person, has political motivations, or is a criminal.

Anyone, especially anyone who is NOT a member of FPI, that believes the trash talk against Ahok...You need to wake up! The truth is easily discoverable if you just use your brains! This is ONLY a problem of people not understanding Indonesian correctly, looking at edited sources, or not looking at all and trusting gossip! Watch it yourself and pay attention: he greets everyone in the Muslim way, although he is a Christian. He doesn't say WHO misused al-Ma'idah 51. What stupidity to call it defamation of religion!

For those Muslims who are concerned about voting for Ahok, you have been misled. Al-Ma'idah does not discuss politics and leaders.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الْيَهُودَ وَالنَّصَارَىٰ أَوْلِيَاءَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ
بَعْضٍ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ

al-Ma'idah 51 does not talk about political leaders. If you stop looking at Indonesian resources, you will find that the word being translated as "leaders" is defined as:
"allies": https://quran.com/5 www.clearquran.com/005.html http://legacy.quran.com/5

"friends": http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/k/koran/koran-idx?type=DIV0&byte=158021 http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/quran/5/index.htm https://www.al-islam.org/glorious-quran-translated-commentary-divine-lights-set-2-ali-muhammad-fazil-chinoy/surah-al-maida#verses-51-56 http://aaiil.org/text/hq/trans/ch5.shtml http://www.ahmadiyya.org/english-quran/quran.htm

In addition, using this resource: http://www.quranbrowser.com/ you can see the translations of various Muslims:
Pickthall, Shakir, Sher Ali: friends
Yusuf Ali: friends & protectors
Hilali-Khan: Auliya' (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.)
Khalifa: allies

Non-Muslims can also be viewed:
Arberry, Rodwell & Sale: friends
Palmer: patrons

And here is one more resource with in excess of 34 translations from various sources: http://www.islamawakened.com/quran/5/51/default.htm
The word Auliyah' is translated variously as friends, allies, protectors, sponsors, patrons, intimate friends/tutors, guardians, confidants, protecting friends, reliable allies

Google Translate translates the word to "parents", both within the context of the verse and on its own. ;) I guess their AI is still learning. ;)

The famous religion scholar and Muslim, Zahir Naik, said that it means "protectors"

So, as you can see, not one of these non-Indonesian resources translates the verse as meaning leaders. Muslims, you are free to vote for whomever you feel is worthy!
