Definitely a desire for righteousness, whether properly sought out or horribly misguided(or even more likely a mixture of both). Also the fact that literacy has been required in order to be considered an adult male for at least the past 2000 years. This has brought them to the forefront of all intellectual endeavours.

The Chinese and the Jews have advocated study and learning to the point of requiring educational tests for their leadership roles. These cultures did this for thousands of years, as you say.
