Ulog 148: Homemade Brown Gravy Mix

in powehousecreatives •  5 years ago  (edited)

I have been slowly adding all my own cooking and baking mixes to the pantry. Two months ago I made a post about my "cream of everything" soup mix. And today I am adding my brown gravy mix recipe to the working pantry; and sharing with you.

RECIPE

  • 1-1/2 c. flour
  • 6 tbsp. beef bouillon granules
  • 3 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 6 tbsp. onion powder
  • 1-1/2 tsp. celery seed
  • 1-1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 2 tsp. ground thyme

Mix all ingredients together. If you don't have beef bouillon granules, you can do what I did which was crush up beef bouillon cubes with a mortar and pestle; or use a coffee bean grinder.

You can also add some corn starch to the mix to help thicken if you don't want to use flour. Just be careful of he amount you would add.

Doubling this recipe will fill a quart size jar.

When you want to use the gravy mix, just measure out 1/4 cup and whisk together with one-cup of water or milk. The original recipe I found called for larger amounts of bouillon, thyme and onion powder, but I prefer to have a bland starting point and add more flavor as I cook up the main dish. I do not add salt to this mix as I prefer to keep things a little low sodium here.

What a great idea making up your own gravy mix! Thanks for sharing:)

I have so many of them. I'll be sharing every so often here.

Great idea. This sounds good ana is so much cheaper than those little packets.

My wife and I moved away from the store bought taco seasoning packets a while ago and we would never go back now. Pretty much zero sodium now and all of the great flavor that people enjoy. We just use a basic mix of chili powder, garlic powder, cumin, and some pulverized chili power we got from Arizona. Sometimes we add some oregano. I am a big fan of these homemade mixes!

Goldendawne, I have to admire how well organized you are in the pantry. Making your own gravy mix is great idea to have ready for your next roast of beef. I could use this when I need gravy for poutine.
