Ulog 142: Stewed Tomatoes- Preserving Is Coming To A Season's End

in powerhousecreatives •  5 years ago

It has been typical fall weather here for the last three days. Cool breezes, cloudy skies with rain showers almost non-stop.So getting work done outdoors has been on hold; but that by no means has stopped the chores and preparations for the upcoming winter months from ceasing around the homestead.

!

Since the conditions outside haven't been fit to harvest more from the gardens, I turned my sights to the 20-pounds of tomatoes awaiting my attention in the cold pantry.

After getting my regular daily chores done the other day, I started heating up a pot of water for blanching, got my jars prepped and began washing the tomatoes to make extra stewed tomatoes for the future months of cooking.

While I already have six quarts and eight pints of these luscious, and much sought after, stewed tomatoes in the pantry, I do use them for many recipes throughout the year. Plus it never hurts to have a few extra jars just in case.

All these beauties turned into eight quarts and eight pints of stewed tomatoes that will definitely be a welcomed addition to our pantry.

There are so many dishes and meals these can be used for, including adding to my marinara sauce for a larger quantity of sauced for dinner, chili, goulash, a creamy curry and chicken crock-pot stew and even homemade tomato soup.

My pantry is becoming fuller and fuller with each passing week and I'm glad I'm still physically able to do as much canning as I can this year. Last year my canning season was cut short, and even though it takes me longer to accomplish each canning session, I trudge through the pain and discomfort because I know ALL these goodies will be much appreciated in the months to come.

You can never have too many tomatoes like this preserved! I love using them all through the winter for soups, chilis and anything else. I still haven't canned any myself (we never seem to get enough out of our own garden), but I got a jar from my boyfriend's mom this past weekend. Definitely time well spent, though I hope you got a little down time to recover from such a chore. :)

There is nothing more gratifying than looking at a pantry full of freshly canned foods @goldendawne. I miss canning tomatoes, they're so much better and I'm sure more nutritious too! Beatiful job, I'm sure you're happy to have completed this batch but seeing the tomato plants dwindle each year is kind of sad too :) What other veggies have you been preserving? Drying herbs too I'm sure. I've been thinking about buying another canner and buying at the farmers market...its not the same, but I do miss it so, lol

Because I live in a tropical country I never experienced such activity but it sounds fun and lots of planning 😬

Haha right on! We just jarred a couple dozen with Roma tomatoes, some with basil, some with jalapeños! I wonder how those will turn out.

Great stuff for the winter.

Lovely tomatoes! I understand the pain issue, but wish I didn’t! Enjoy your harvest!

You're right, those are so useful in so many recipes. Worst case, tomatoe soup comes to mind which isn't bad at all.

We have loads of tomatoes but only a couple of red ones so far. Not looking good

This time of year is always very busy, but as the cold weather approaches all of your efforts will be rewarded.
I am also very busy here on the farm.
With the nice weather still hanging in there, the garden is continuing to pump out vegetables.😂
Most everything we put into storage is blanched and then vacuum sealed.
Getting out of town for a while when the real cold weather sets in, doesn't allow us to preserve our produce in mason jars. We totally shut down the farm, and we are afraid the very cold temps would freeze the goodies and of course the mason jars would explode.
My mom was a big caner, and her stewed tomatoes were the best. She would serve them straight up as a side to a meal.
I hear you when you mentioned the effort it takes to squirrel everything away.
As the saying goes, "We ain't getting any younger.
As soon as I saw the title Stewed Tomatoes, I had to read, as the first thing that came to mind was my mother, and that always puts a smile on my face.

Wonderful post!

Glad to hear you are still getting things done as you can! I can so relate to that! Lovely jars of tomatoes there!
