Things to not feed your dog... and things you can, but still probably shouldn't

in powerhousecreatives •  5 years ago  (edited)

I should know this after more than 30 years of keeping dogs, but I learned the hard way when Nadi was throwing up for 2 days straight.

Like most dogs, my Shih-Tzu will stare at me no matter what I am eating. I could be eating nothing and just making eating sounds and this is where she would patiently wait presumably until the end of time or she falls asleep.

A friend of mine owns a macadamia nut farm and he gave me a few bags of them to take home. One day I was munching on these (which i don't particularly care for and don't understand why they are so expensive) and of course doggo was sitting there staring at me the entire time. So I gave her a few of them which she promptly gobbled down without really even chewing them.

She loved it and i just presumed that they were ok for dogs to eat.

As it turns out many types nuts are potentially toxic to dogs which is something I was unaware of. I found out that little doggie tummies can not process nuts in the middle of the night when she threw it up on the floor - the nut was almost completely undigested and you'll have to take my word for that because I am not going to post pics of dog puke.

not dead, this is just one of her many resting poses

It took another day before she threw the other one up. It didn't seem to curb her appetite because she was still eating dog food, but also throwing that up as well. It isn't a big deal because it only takes about 1 and a half paper towels to clean up such a small quantity.

I looked online and it said unless your dog ate a lot of them, there is no cause for alarm because dogs are actually quite good at taking care of toxins using their built in defenses.

But i learned a valuable lesson. No nuts for dogs!

You can give them other things though!!

House slippers that were entirely too small for me for example... no problem. She actually wont chew them though, and I am happy about this.

Or you can give them an entire leg of lamb (remnants) that is as long as her body is. She'll be working on that for a while I'm sure!

She will bare her little rice-sized teeth and growl at you if you get too close. I find it really humorous that she believe she could ever hurt anything.

By the way, she has a ridiculous haircut now because I am passing her off as a "mixed breed" on our upcoming flight. Snub-nosed breeds such as Shih-Tzu's are banned on most airlines for some reason but unless a veterinarian is working at the cargo section of the airline, she just looks like any ol' dog now.

There's a dog here that eats literally anything. Sometimes I look at the link mf and just wonder what the hell goes on in it's stomach. I also noticed they barely chew anything other than bones.

yeah the pace that dogs eat is pretty remarkable. It must just be built into their DNA to eat as fast as possible because in the wild they needed to eat fast or maybe the food would get stolen.

It must be just in their nature because my dog has NEVER competed for food and I have never taken it away from her except for one time where she was choking on something, coughed it up, then started to eat it again.

Lol I just imagined your tiny dog growling at you for taking away her food. They're the cutest

Aww so cute I feel you when they stare at you everytime we eat. It's so hard to bear not to give them some. We have four Shih Tzus and it often gets crazy around the house. I'm sure she'll pass through your flight. Crazy rule in banning Shih Tzus.

I heard about macadamia nuts before, but I didn't realize that dogs were unable to digest nuts in general. Good to know!

One thing I learned some years ago is that giving dogs shrimp shells can mess them up pretty bad. One day a few years back I was eating a ton of shrimp and throwing the shells to my dogs. They both happily gobbled them up. Within a day, both of them got bleeding scabs (weirdly) in the bony crease between their eyes and down the nose.

It was so weird! We took them to the vet and he asked me what they had eaten. After I told him about the shrimp, he said that dogs have a strong reaction to the histamine in shellfish. I felt like a crappy dog owner, but learned my lesson after that!

yeah, i was wrong about the "all nuts" thing, i chose some wrong words to use in my post and have changed them. It isn't all nuts, just a few specific types. However, i'm just going to avoid them altogether in the future, just to be safe.

probably a good idea.. Dogs are generally carnivores anyway other than the odd plants they nibble on from time to time. Especially when they have an upset tummy!

She's a very cute dog. Chocolate and onions can be deadly to dogs, and I've met a lot of dog owners who don't know this. It's very cute when they protect their food from us, after we've given it to them! 😂

Flat nosed dogs battle to breath, hence the airlines reluctance to move them without a vet to my knowledge.

Our dog is the same with eating, if it can go in your mouth... yup why not theirs, have to watch what we feed them. That is one cute dog with attitude, looking very smart after being shaved.

yes, that is the reason. My experience has been that mostly the airlines will do it anyway, but you have to sign a form relieving them of any liability should your pet die in transit, which is something you have to sign anyway regardless of the breed. I just lie in order to avoid the hassle. It might make it sound like I don't care about my dog but I looked it up and the chances are extremely low..... Plus we have flown multiple times already together - she'll be fine.

If she has flown before it should be OK, she sure looks cute with her hairstyle.

Nice piece

Your dog is soo cute! Give her a hug for meee

Wow, this must have been really scary for you. I can totally feel your pain. We were camping a Summer or two ago and our dog got bit by some kind of bug. Her face started to swell up and it was the middle of the night. We had been drinking so we couldn't drive anywhere and we were in the middle of nowhere camping. Thankfully our friend found a Dollar General and we were able to get some benydryl for her. We give our dog peanut butter with her meds, but I knew that cashews were not good for them. It makes sense that a soft and oily nut like macadmias would be bad too I guess. I love them so whenever we have them I hoard them all anyway!

Oh I would be rubbing that belly all day long! Cute pix in your slippers. I did not know Shih-Tzu's are banned on planes. I wonder why. Welcome to PHC.

it has something to do with snub-nosed breeds having a higher chance of dying in the changing pressure environment. I was concerned about this but then looked it up and while it is, in fact, a higher chance, it is so incredibly small that it is insignificant. I'm guessing that someone a long time ago must have won a frivolous lawsuit when their dog died in transit. I don't know if this is true though.

And chocolate. Chocolate is another bad thing for dogs. But bacon! Now there's a snack my dog loses her shit over.

Neat idea to get her on the plane!

It is crazy what dogs will eat. In Natal we had Avocado trees and every time we heard a thud when one hit the ground it would be a race to get there first. My dogs put on so much weight as they would munch through so many each day carefully peeling off the skin. Lets hope you get away with the mixed breed stunt as some of the rules just seem stupid.

I knew chocolate was not a good thing to feed dogs, but I had no idea about the rest!

Those are some ridiculously cute photos man!!! Especially that one of her on her side.. I guess all shih tzu's have what I call Gorbachev Belly. CUTE!!

I am so used to cleaning up throw up.. out of the carpet is much worse than a couple of paper towels though. Pepper is out puke dog. Have no clue, but in the middle of the night is the best. I hear that regurgitation reflex thingy and hustle half awake to get him up and to the tile floor in the bathroom. Easier to clean up there. Well once I got up so fast because he was getting ready to hurl, and didn't realize both legs were asleep.. Yup, you guessed it.. Total face plant into the wall. Pretty funny I guess. I cleaned everything up with a bruise on the head and bad attitude. oh well.

I know to steer clear from the major ones.. Grapes, raisins, garlic, nuts, and onions. Other than that, google gets asked a lot of times "Is ??? safe for dogs".. HAHAHAHahahah.. yeah, I'm that guy ;-)

My pups don't get angry when we take their food. We started just pulling stuff away when they were puppies in order to prepare them for it later. Worked well, although now Molly steels Peppers stuff all the time with no threat of retaliation. I didn't see that coming hehe. LOVING the shot of the slippers :-D

I LOVE NADI POSTS!!!!!

it's probably too late for me to train the food aggression out of Nadi as she is over 6 years old now. It isn't an issue since we aren't really ever around kids.

Glad to hear that Molly and Pepper also have Gorbachev belly, I was thinking only my doge was a baby cow!

I am very familiar with the middle of the night retch-run to the bathroom, even though my entire house is tile. One time she made a mess on the bed and I guess I was in a coma because I didn't wake up at all until my feet were covered in it the next morning. We did a lot of laundry that day.

Hahaha. Yes yes. We have done the late night laundry thing. So now we put blankets over the comforter, but it’s cold here so it works for us. Cow belly. Cute. I like that better than what I call it. Yeah, don’t try and teach her not to growl over her food. Too late and kids need to learn the hard way sometimes. Haha

Too cute! Really? No nuts? Mine love peanut butter. He just turned 14 years old. The only reason I don't allow too much peanut is due to weight gain that will lead to joint problems.

yeah, that's a good point... why is peanut butter ok? Dogs eat that all the time.

as it turns out it isn't all nuts but just a few types. The article i read says that they don't even know why macadamia nuts don't agree with dog tummies, it is just understood that you shouldn't do it. Walnuts and chestnuts were also listed as no no's. Apparently peanuts are fine though.

I'm just gonna play it safe from here on out and keep the nuts away from Nadi in a general sense :)

Hahaha, I have a competition with the squirrels when the macadamias start to drop off the trees. Out at 5am in the mornings to collect the nuts although I share a lot with them.
Our little Troy also snarls when he has a treat and I often tease him.
Nuts and chocolates are no good as are palm tree fruits and Troy often pukes after he has been outside.
Good luck with your little one on the trip my friend!
Blessings!

How adorable and yet at the same time they are the ones we worry about and I they could only talk! I just have our dog his 6 year old birthday plate !
Thanks for the lovely dogsofsteemit post

Wow, that is good to know, @gooddream! I’m glad your dog did not get too sick.

I didn't know about this, good to know! I love macadamia and because they're so expensive I'm quite the miser with them. They're lovely when they're roasted and salted! Your doggie is really cute;)

how beautiful she is, I definitely love her and I love all the puppies in the world, and also the cats, the rabbits, the horses. lol

LOL @ the house slippers!!! Our pup has a sock fetish!

As for "no no's" - another potentially fatal thing to feed dogs AND cats... is avocado pear.

Cute doggie @gooddream, I'm glad she's ok. 🙏

Those big slippers and her cute face, Oh my god she is extremely cute. but her furry hair suits her way lot more than not having any. I literally smiled when you wrote about the puke's picture. Ya I wasn't even expecting the picture though :p

TIL the reasoning for banning snub nosed dogs from airplanes is apparently because the high altitudes in the cargo section can make it harder for them to breathe and make them sick if they have any kind of conditions. Had no fucking idea that was even a thing.

Guess if I ever own any snub nosed breeds I should just throw them in a box with a pile of beaver tranquilizers and ship them out if I have to take them far away. Hell yeah, man.

i think your last suggestion is the preferred method of transporting most animals, snub-nosed or not.

The only way I could see it going better is if you had hedgehogs that needed to be transported. You could then load them into a pinata and fill it with K2 and sex toys from a BDSM website. You get to get your animals where they need to be, and get to help throw someone a beautiful birthday party.

Haha! Very clever with the hair cut sir gooddream. I'm constantly looking things up online to see if they're okay to feed or German Shepard, been surprised quite a few times. We have to eat clean and very dog friendly foods because we always end up sharing!
