Browsing over old books I ran into these lines from an old classic, and I could not help reflecting about our current world.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

Even though this description may very well suit the present times, it is almost two years old. It comes from Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities (1859). Dickens was describing the Europe (especially France and England) of 1775.

And I wonder if humanity is not always repeating tales of many cities from all over the world. Will we ever learn from our mistakes? Will we ever enjoy a long-lasting period of peace and prosperity? Are we cursed to produce amazing miracles followed by outrageous acts of destruction?

Era el mejor de los tiempos, era el peor de los tiempos, la edad de la sabiduría, y también de la estupidez; era la época de las creencias, era la época de la incredulidad; era la temporada de la Luz, era la temporada de las Tinieblas; era la primavera de la esperanza, era el invierno de la desesperación. Lo teníamos todo, no teníamos nada; íbamos directo al Cielo, íbamos directo al otro lado. En una palabra, aquella época era tan parecida a la actual, que sus más notables autoridades insistían en que se le considerara, para bien o para mal, la comparación sólo en grado superlativo.

Aunque esta descripción pudiera perfectamente encajar en nuestros tiempos, data de casi doscientos años. Viene de Un cuento de dos ciudades, de Charles Dickens’ (1859). Dickens describía de esta manera la Europa, (especialmente Francia e Inglaterra) de 1775.

Y me pregunto si acaso la humanidad no vive en un constante repetir de cuentos de muchas ciudades, de todas partes del mundo. ¿Será que algún día aprenderemos de nuestros errores? ¿Disfrutaremos algún día un periodo largo de paz y prosperidad? ¿Estamos condenados a producir asombrosos Milagros seguidos de indignantes actos de destrucción?
