Grasshopper is one of the easily found insects in the rice field area. For humans, grasshoppers themselves actually have benefits.
In addition to tasty and savory meat to eat, locusts themselves also have high protein nutrients for the growth of children. Obviously, the price is also relatively cheap even if you want to search for free in the rice fields.
Leaf-eating insects and herbivore alias plant is included in Orthoptera order and sub-order Caelifera.
Grasshoppers can be identified from the color that looks green resembling rice leaves and some other types of yellowish. Grasshoppers have a pair of antennas with a short size.
If anyone hears the sound of grasshoppers like crickets, this is often caused by the sound of friction between the femur at the back of the body with the abdomen or the front wing (stridulation).
Other common traits, grasshoppers are very good at jumping from one bud to another. This is because the rear femur has a long and strong size to move around by jumping.
Both wings of grasshoppers are not often used to fly, just to support the mobility or locust movement from one location to another.
Speaking of the anatomy of grasshoppers, usually the size of a female grasshoppers body is much larger than a male locust.
5 Types of Grasshoppers
Grasshopper (Hedge Grasshopper). The wooden locusts are often in the trees or shrubs.
Grasshopper or Grasshopper Sentadu. His name is derived from the habit of a worship mantis that looks like a worshiper. Uniquely, after mating, the female locusts will eat the heads of male grasshoppers to feed their children's eggs later.
Green Grasshopper. Can change the color of his body from green to brown depending on changes in ambient temperature.
Grasshopper Stone. Has a color like a stone, which is grayish black and there is white patches. This color is a protection system of stone grasshoppers to look the same with the environment and outwit predators or humans.
Leafhopper, leaf locust has a habitat in the bush or leaves environment that affects the ability to change the body color to be like a leaf. It is almost impossible to tell the difference between a leaf locust and its leaves because of the perfect camouflage of a leaf locust.
Characteristic of grasshoppers
***To differentiate with other types of insects, grasshoppers have unique features that are unique and are not possessed by other insects. What are they? Here are the special features of grasshopper:
Grasshoppers have a pair of short antennas above the head
There are a pair of wings
Plant or herbivore
Grasshoppers have a tracheal respiratory system
Grasshoppers have a pair of eyes right in front
Grasshoppers reproduce by laying eggs
There are a pair of front legs and a pair of hind legs (4 legs)
Grasshoppers are green but some are brown
Grasshopper is equipped with femur as a means to jump
Locusts move by jumping or flying
Grasshoppers can be eaten even though it has become a carcass
How to breed grasshoppers
To breed, grasshoppers make the process of marriage with the distribution of sperm into the body of a female locust.
Then, ready-made eggs will be placed in the soil protected by fallen leaves. During the egg-laying process, the female locusts can produce 300 eggs in one process for 3 to 4 days.
A few weeks later, the eggs will hatch into nymphs, locusts that have no wings. The nymphs are generally white or green and move around by jumping.
The immature nymph is called imago. When an adult, the reproductive system will be formed and ready to make the process of marriage or breed. So it creates a continuous breeding chain of grasshoppers.
