The bible explains that there is a spiritual hierarchy, there are three types of man, the natural man in which the body prevails, the rational man in which the soul and emotions prevail; and finally the spiritual man in which the spirit prevails.
The goal of the spiritual life is to reach the perception with the mind of the immaterial truths, reason by itself cannot reach the truth. In other words, the purpose of the spiritual is to achieve the likeness to God; and this is the spiritual man, the man similar to God, the man who is born of water and of the spirit. This is explained by Jesus in his dialogue with Nicodemus:
"Jesus replied, ´Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God, unless they are born again´
´How can someone be born when they are old?´ Nicodemus asked.´Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born!´
Jesus answered, ´Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to Spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ´You must be born again´. The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.´" John 3:5-8.

Just as the nature of the worm is the butterfly and the nature of the seed is the tree that bears fruit, the nature of man is conformity to Jesus, this is why Jesus in the bible describes the kingdom of God with parables.
The spiritual enlightenment is explained by Jesus in the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-23), it is achieved by living with constancy (fear of God) the word (wisdom). This is how the complete man is born, the man who reaches perfection, the spiritual man: "Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect", Matthew 5:48.
The apostle Paul summarizes the ideal of spiritual life in his second letter to the Corinthians: "This is what we pray for, that you may become perfect", 2 Corinthians 13:9
