Prayer for Immortality: Do not take me away, my God, in the midst of my days; your years go on through all generations. Psalm 102:24

The Psalm 102 was probably a psalm composed at different times. This song is fundamentally the prayer of a man concerned by a serious affliction, probably an illness, but it contains in the middle of its development an oracle for Zion. Surely the part referring to the oracle is a late addition to the Psalm, made by people exiled in Babylon, perhaps this Psalm has been interpreted by the exiled Jews as a lament for the loss of the divine blessings.
The Psalm, after a long lament and an invocation to the sovereign power of God, recognizes how short the life of man is and compares it to the smoke that dissipates; everything is sad when man distances himself from God, the Psalm teaches.
But the Psalm insists on its request for the most excellent and the best from the Lord, and concludes that immortality belongs to God, and that the Lord, in his eternal immutability, grants this blessing to those who fear his name. It is important to note that the Psalm does not ask for health but for immortality, which is more important. In the literature of the sapiential books, like the Book of Wisdom or Ben Sira, immortality is the gift of longevity, that is why the Psalm can also be considered a prayer for immortality, for the long life.
In this way the Psalm recognizes that wisdom, eternal, immutable, and uncreated, is the origin of long life:
"In the course of my life he broke my strength;
he cut short my days.
So I said:
´Do not take me away, my God, in the midst of my days;
your years go on through all generations.
In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
Like clothing you will change them
and they will be discarded.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end" Psalm 102:23-27.
