Moving away from YouTube and towards Steem, VidMe and Minds

in prepper •  8 years ago

Hi all, I started my YouTube channel over 4 years ago now and at the time it was a daunting prospect and I was even then aware of how difficult it is to get recognised. I wasn't financially driven and at first the channel wasn't even monetised. I did eventually monetise the channel because I wanted it to fund itself, to bring in an income so that I can show new things regularly that would help people to be prepared. Running the channel has cost me hundreds, if not thousands of pounds. Equipment to actually present things, camera equipment, better computer than I had to edit the footage on and the electricity and running costs. In recent light of things happening with YouTube it's now clear that the channel on YouTube will never fund itself based on their broken advertiser model.

They do not tailor and work with advertisers so that relevant adverts are shown with relevant video material. In my case with my channel you'd expect that outdoor equipment, torches, tools, people who make knives, camping equipment makers and producers would be matched with my channel. I've seen my channel on a browser with uBlock not installed and the adverts tailored with the video's have absolutely nothing to do with prepping. They are low quality mass produced and distributed adverts that are not going to fund the channel at all. Coupled with the recent 'adgate' all advertisers have pulled from YouTube and now obviously the few cents I was getting per video has COMPLETELY dried up.

So as another prepper said this is an opportunity. So what am I doing? Well I'm moving towards blockchain sites such as Steemit and looking into cryptocurrency. My good friend and experienced Steemit user BarryDutton is helping me out with that :-) I'm a total nib when it comes to crypto and blockchain. VidMe is likely in 2 months or less to be the primary video platform I upload all my video's to. They are much more friendly and engaging (the users and the admin) The staff at VidMe will actually get directly in touch with you and help you with problems.

I am also on Minds now. VidMe is where articles with video on Steemit and Minds will be directed to. Video's will no longer be linked to my YouTube channel. I've left the YouTube channel monetised, however I've turned off all three of the optional ways to display adverts on Video's. If YouTube is not going to support the creator's then I'm going to reduce their revenue however little it may be from my channel even further. Once I've moved over all video's from YouTube to VidMe I'll then exclusively upload to VidMe all new video's and then after 2 months remove completely my YouTube channel, delete my Adsense account and then delete any accounts I have related to Geordie Prepper or not that I have with Google.

I am a great believer in Peaceful non-compliance, it is the most devastating tool that we can ever wield. We can win any battle against anything oppressing us by simply doing nothing. If we do this and they attack then any and ALL actions after that in our defence are lawfully justified.

So in other words you'll be seeing more of me on Steemit and I hope you enjoy what I show, it's intention is to make people better prepared for personal, local, national, international events that could affect you, and all of us. Hope you check me out on the other platforms too and subscribe/follow me on VidMe. If you make video's and are not on there already I'd highly recommend you browse the site and check it out. It's such a great sense of community over there.

Be safe and be prepared

What is the advantages of minds over steemit ?

Hi, I haven't used both long enough to know the true advantages of one over the other. They are both mostly blog sites and both don't really handle video very well yet. They are probably on a par with each other really. I have limited experience of crypto currency so the advantage for me at the minute is there is less learning curve involved in monetisation of my channel on minds, although it's not monetised right now. The only reason I'm having to branch out at all is because YouTube is broken for creator's right now. Each one I am on now has many many benefits over YouTube, I'm enjoying them all right now.

Thank you for the info !

I've also started a Vidme channel just to try it out. I've been using it on and off since Dec. 16, 2016.

Despite Vidme's motto of "creators first", I don't find that to be the case as I have been denied verification twice by them. Without verification, I can't categorize my videos nor monetize them. Without the ability to categorize, it's hard for viewers to discover your videos.

Vidme allows users to transfer their YouTube videos to Vidme just with a url. I'm verified on YouTube yet they still refuse to verify my Vidme account. When I ask them for a reason, they say they can't tell me.

I am not the only one they have done this to. They arbitrarily pick and choose who they verify.

Vidme pretends to be less controlling than YouTube but they are no better than YT, as some would have you believe.

That's why I'm trying out @DTube. Hopefully I'll get better results.

Hey man. I should look at DTube too. I'm looking for somewhere to host my video's that can embed in my steemit posts and play in them.

I've heard some people saying about the verification process on VidMe and them being denied. I'm not sure why some people have trouble and majority don't. Seems a bit fishy that they can't tell you. Maybe ask for someone else higher up than individual you are talking to and ask if someone in more senior position can help? Hope you get verified.

I am using BitChute, they automatically carry across video's to it I upload on YouTube, which is nice of them :-)

Vidme has ignored me on Twitter and Reddit for criticizing their verification process. Questions I ask them on Twitter go unanswered while everyone else gets a response.

Vidme has also demonetized creators who were already monetized, simply for criticizing their platform. That doesn't sound like an improvement over YouTube.

I've already been turned off by Vidme and my channel has been dormant for a couple of months. I don't even watch any videos on Vidme because it's mostly gamers and I have no interest in that genre. Vidme is relying on creators watching other creators' videos. They don't get many views from non-creators. It's like a snake eating its own tail.

I've already gotten encouraging results with DTube with one of my videos earning over $10 in a day. That's without having to jump through hoops to get verified and not having to beg people to donate or subscribe.

DTube has its flaws though. Some days I can't get videos to upload. Also, you can't edit anything after your video is published. That means you better make sure you have no typos in your title and description, because you can't correct them after publishing. I'm sure as they get further along, they'll introduce an edit button.

You also can't embed the videos to play in a Steemit post, as you mention and that's a strike against it. However, DTube is still going through growing pains and that might change later on.

Does BitChute allow you to monetize your videos?

Hey man, yeah people have varying experiences with verification on Twitter. Seems there is no defined way to get verified there. I don't think BitChute has monetization (yet) at least I haven't seen an option to monetise my video's. I don't really log in to BitChute that much because once I upload to YouTube it automatically posts it on BitChute. I only really login a day after I've posted a video just to check it's on BitChute and to see how it's initially done with views.

I'll keep an eye on DTube though, seems like that once it's matured a bit could be the answer to where I upload to.

Oh, that's cool that your YT videos automatically post to BitChute. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks!

Yeah, very nice of them to do that hehe. Check out BitChute for sure. The video's don't embed in STEEMIT though. I did have high hopes that I could just upload to BitChute but that prospect was soon ended once I tested it out. Oh well, I'm still searching. Want to ditch Google for good if possible.

Good news!

I was reading BitChute's FAQ (https://www.bitchute.com/faq) and at the very bottom it says they are working on a way to monetize it.

I'm not loyal to any platform right now and I'm keeping my options open. The thing you have to keep in mind is that you don't know which of these will be around in a few years.

Yeah, I think at this point it's best to be EVERYWHERE! haha. Of course it takes me much longer to post my stuff on all the platforms, but it was the censorship on YouTube that made me look at alternatives in the first place and on those sites there's a really good community so I guess that is one thing I have to thank Google for. The ONLY thing however.
