The acid in the tomatoes will eat the can.
I buy Aylmer's tomatoes in Canada and they come in a copper lined can. I think Hunt's uses plastic lined cans. I personally prefer copper over plastic. I don't need to be feminized by my canned goods.
I'm not sure what you have for options in the USA but I suspect our brands aren't available there.

It would be useful to keep a list of which tins use that plastic lining.

Absolutely. I have found that generally it is the Tomatoe tins and now these potatoes... I often wonder why all of a sudden they feel the need to add this lining, in the past i cannot remember plastic lined tins before.. I also watch out for aluminium lined products aswell...
