What is the value of the data? It is a difficult question because people simply understand its value.
For example, a recent news found that it is 30% more expensive for iPhone users to call a taxi than Android users, or when we shop at Amazon, their website tends to recommend products based on our rates. Clicks
What does that mean? The price difference of 30 percent, which is probably $ 8 or $ 9 on average, can reach hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. Meanwhile, the more than 100 million Amazon Prime members who pay a monthly or annual fee for free two-day shipping and other services can also generate an amazing amount of revenue.
Technology giants like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Didichuxing are immersing themselves in the data streams of our lives and making money with our data at no cost.
However, we have no idea how our data was being collected, what it would be used for and who was using it.
Today there are so many discussions about ownership of the data. Representatives of technology companies, especially those from the United States and China, emphasized that user data belongs to them, since they are the service providers.
On the other hand, you, as a user, could say “since I am the data creator, I will be the owner of my data”. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a regulation in EU legislation that came into effect last month, is enacted to protect data ownership and privacy of all people within the European Union.
In conclusion, the interpretation of ownership of the data by GDPR is:
• Companies must take appropriate measures to process data in a fair, legitimate and transparent manner.
• The processing of personal data strictly necessary to prevent fraud is a legitimate interest of the data controller
• Personal data must be adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary for the purposes for which they are processed.
• The measures will be reviewed and updated as necessary.
• Personal data that is inaccurate must be rectified or deleted.
• The period of data storage must not exceed the time required to process personal data.
• Personal data must be handled in a safe and proper manner, including the use of appropriate technical or organizational measures to prevent unauthorized or illegal processing that results in loss, destruction or damage.
Users must know the following rules before any company is using their data;
• How do you use my data?
• What benefits can you get from my data?
• Who is using my data?
• Who is responsible for using my data?
In a word, the data belongs to the users, not to the companies. Companies must be able to demonstrate that users have given their consent to the processing of their data, and users have the right to withdraw their consent at any time.
While ownership of the data can determine if the data can circulate, the data itself is still stored on the servers of large companies. There is no way for users to own their data, because no company will return the data to users and say “hey, we create a new folder on your laptop to store all your credit card records or purchase history.”
The above examples of Call Taxi and Amazon’s automatic recommendation system are based on a typical commercial judgment based on macro data and machine learning analysis. What we need is not the data itself, but the value found in the data.
Most of the big companies, from IT giants such as Google and Amazon to traditional retailers like Walmart and Sears, have built a broad set of connected computers that work together, also known as computer clusters, to support business intelligence, in a I try to extract the data value.
The data is valuable
Ownership of the data must belong to the interested parties or users who have created data.
Data creators must own their data and benefit from their data.
DxChain aims to solve all these critical problems. DxChain hopes to create a decentralized data exchange platform to help users not only to own and control their data, but also to extract and enjoy the value of the data.
