First steps in making my homemade probiotics today was to sanitize the wide mouth mason jars. I used star sans and cheaper than I like gloves with paper towels. Follow the dillution instructions please and get more durable gloves too!

After sanitizing the mason jars I then proceeded to wash the rice. I'm using the rice wash to collect all the various good and bad microbes in the environment. I'll drain the rice out with a nylon strainer than fill a jar 2/3 full leaving a nice air space for the microbes to off gas/breathe and expand in.

Next I will (since it is cold) use a seedling heating mat to raise the temperature in the dark area it is in to the mid to upper 70s.

Once the rice wash smells sweet and separates I'm ready to add it to milk for the second step!
