Rainy day, beginning of the shop setup

in production •  7 years ago

Yesterday was rainy and stormy. It was good to see the property in the rain, the land absorbs the water really well. That's encouraging.

It's fun watching the birds play in this yard.

I got some pictures of the shop for a "before" post. It's a big mess because I just unloaded things into it willy nilly with little to no thought on how to lay it out yet.

I've posted some of the projects I did at the old house, but never photos of the shop. That's because my workspace itself was in shambles. We had household stuff, kid toys, spare kitchen chairs, and a bunch of other stuff in our garage that I used as my work space. There was so much going on that I just gave up on maintaining a tidy, organized production area. Now I have my own space. A whole shop to dedicate to production.

There's the doors to the shop. It's ultra convenient to have two doors like that. I'll be able to have access for vehicles that need work or loading and unloading large materials and products. And I'll be able to use the little door when I want to maintain climate control. Yeah, A/C is an option because I'm boujie. I'm really lucky we found this place. It may actually prompt me to register my business because I'll then be able to write off that space on my taxes and I rarely make enough actual yearly profit to have to pay taxes on. It'll save my family a good bit of money.

The shop is a big mess right now, like I said. But I'm going to set it up as efficiently as I can. I'll work up production plans and 5S the place real good. I'm lucky to have the work background that I do because I'll utilize that knowledge here to make my setup as smooth as it can be. The engineer at the first weld job I ever had was really into 5S and lean manufacturing. I learned a whole lot from him. And where I'm at now, the shop is incredibly efficient in it's design. This is going to be a very well designed space for such a small outfit.

Efficient design is important and directly tied to production and quality. If your shop isn't set up for success, you're going to have a harder time running a profitable enterprise. Not that it isn't possible, it'll just add unnecessary resistance in your work flow.

My next step, hopefully this weekend, is to spend some time mapping (probably in my head) the work space and flow. Then I'll set up the shop. It'll be fun designing my own space for production. I'll have to work around the existing storage solutions, which I think will present a good advantage over my previous situation. This will all be awesome for scaling my business if I want to go that route. It's been a while since I made any substantial growth in the shop.

Updates inbound pending time. Can't wait for the blockchain unveiling of my new production space!

Stay relevant y'all

Thats basically what keyline design for the garden is about - where are the resources, what does the workflow look like and how can it be as efficient as possible.
Looks like a real nice workshop! :D Looking forward to seeing it evolve :)

I know! I'm seeing a lot of the keywords are similar. I've also noticed a lot of production systems at work that try to mimic nature. Ebb and flow and branches. Idk if I'm the only one that sees it, but it's interesting to me.

I work best when things are organized and easy to find and there's enough room. Part of dealing with Lyme disease, I guess. That's a nice shop space!
