Artur, the knight of smiles

Arturo could not practice his profession in his new country, but even so, he never showed fear of working. He managed to be employed as a person in charge of a payment stand in a parking lot. It was not the best job but it gave him the opportunity to live austerely and calmly. He had a restless spirit, he did not dislike doing things just for doing them, everything he did must have a meaning. Therefore, shortly after starting this work, he discovered that many times the people who came to pay the ticket, were sad faces, bitter, rushed, worried.

One day he decided to change this, every time he saw someone with a bad face, he would make a funny joke, tell them a joke, say a nice and encouraging word to them; when the smile sprang on the other side of the glass, he was filled with joy. It did not always go well; Sometimes, the darkness is too dense and the light needs more power to penetrate.

He discovered that he could make others feel good. For this reason, on his days off he investigated about laughter and its effects, he was really interested in studying. It was time to do something bigger, get out of that hut and catch a fatter fish.

He studied the city and noted that there were darker and sadder places than others, that the season also has influence and that, ironically, when festive seasons arrive, one sector elevates its joy, while others reach terrible negative degrees of sadness. It was in this way how he decided to help to balance the balance: he became a clown.

He was not a clown, he was a hospital clown; yes, one of those who go to the health centers and try to make smiles and make sick people feel better.

In his study, he had realized that hospitals were those places where sadness wanders, especially at Christmas. Before long, he became very loved within the community and although laughter was not the cure for diseases, everyone knew very well that it helped a lot towards a quiet death and, in the best case, it helped a good and faster healing.

December had already arrived. Artur was in his humorous tasks at the East Hospital, when he first saw Amanda. A beautiful 24-year-old woman, with a wonderful face, with big eyes that shouted that they were once smiling and dreamers, but now the light leaked through a hole called cancer.

They had detected the disease a couple of months ago and although it was not in a terminal stage, Amanda fell into a depressive abyss that consumed her will and catalyzed the progression of cancer.

When Arturo saw her, something unrecognizable exploded inside him; she saw him and ignored him, nothing would encourage her, far less a clown, one of those who, in themselves, she did not like since she was a child.

Amanda, like Arturo, was a foreigner. In his saddest thoughts he was weighed by having his mother in the distance and fearing never to see her again. It was Christmas and everything intensified; maybe, at this rate, she could die before the end of the month.

Artur visited Amanda daily, tried with all his might to encourage her. In those days, he had felt something new, we will not say it's love, but it was something intense. He wanted to help her, but she did not give in. Every day with flowers, jokes, anecdotes, everything in his mind he could imagine to make her feel better.

One day, she asked in an angry way:

        - What do you want from me? - she said.

        - I want to see you smile once.- Arturo replied.

She made a gesture of contempt.

The days passed and he did not achieve his goal. He was discouraged and, little by little, he was infecting that sadness. A week passed and Artur did not return through the hospital. Nobody knew what had happened to him, why he did not return, what he would be doing, or if his will after all was not legitimate.
