Ayurveda has been used successfully for the treatment of many diseases including the treatment of proteinuria in Ayurveda. Proteinuria is a situation where there is an excessive accumulation of water (diluted urine) in the body, causing damage to various organs. There are two main types of treatment of proteinuria in Ayurveda, namely the demulcent treatment and the antacids or sugars. However, it must be pointed out that the treatment of proteinuria in Ayurveda should be done only with the guidance of a qualified person.
Diabetes is a disease where the body is unable to produce enough insulin from the pancreas. This can result in a situation where too much glucose is generated inside the blood cells and this leads to the accumulation of waste materials like urea, ammonia and cholesterol in the blood. In some cases, treatment of diabetes with medicines like insulin may not be sufficient to reverse the damage that has been caused to the kidney. The diabetic should therefore have a proper diagnosis of the problem and should undergo treatment accordingly.
In order to treat sugar pyrosis, treatment of proteinuria with the help of medicines like Laxmi Vilas Rasa, Shrung Bhasma, Praval Bhasma, Hingashtak-Churna, Abhrak-Bhasma and Suvarna-Bhasma is required. These medicines work by increasing the production of insulin inside the liver cells. When the insulin is produced at adequate levels, then the blood sugar levels start to fall. This condition is known as hypoglycaemia and is also known as the sugar catastrophe. This is one of the most common causes for diabetic shock syndrome and is therefore one of the most important conditions for treatment of proteinuria in Ayurveda.
In addition to treating the cause of hypoglycaemia, treatment of proteinuria in Ayurveda also includes the treatment of the resultant hyperglycemia. In such a situation, treatment of diabetic symptoms like nausea and vomiting should be added to this treatment. The treatment of diabetic symptoms like increased thirst, hunger and urination should be complemented by an equal proportionate increase in the intake of food rich in carbohydrates like rice, soya bean and wheat. Such a diet helps to counteract the dangerous effects of hyperglycaemia and diabetic shock syndrome.
In case of patients who do not respond to any treatment of proteinuria in Ayurveda, additional treatment like special diets or medicines with additional agents should be provided. Medicines that act on the kidneys themselves are known as alkaline blockers. These include Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Chandraprabha-Vati, Abhrak-Bhasma, Trivang-Bhasma, Trivang-Guggulu and Gandhak-Rasayan. Ayurvedic medicines that act on the 'Rakta' data (tissue) of the body are also very useful in such situations.
In order to treat the cause of the hyperglycemia, the treatment of proteinuria in Ayurveda should be followed up by a special treatment of sugar level. Treatment of the individual should be started at a low dose and increased as the condition develops. Sugar level monitoring is an important part of treatment of proteinuria in Ayurveda. This monitoring is usually done through the use of Glycemic Index (GI). A frequent assessment of the glycemic index results in setting up a treatment schedule for the patient. It is always wise to follow the guidelines and recommendations given by the professional body involved in treatment of diabetes.
