Has Sony delivered on the PlayStation 5's promise?
Although the PlayStation 5 was released in 2020, it appears that 2022 will be the year in which Sony capitalizes on its early success by launching a slew of standout video games for the next-generation machine.
There's a lot of competition for what to do in your hard-earned leisure time with 22 great PS5 titles due in 2022. It's a minefield out there selecting where to start, with everything from PlayStation Studios' biggest titles made expressly for the console to many third-party partners debuting their latest and greatest games.
To save you time, we've compiled a list of the top new PS5 games released this year, so you'll know what's worth playing and what's better saved until a sale. After all, it's for the benefit of the players.
ELDEN RING
Let's start with Elden Ring, the giant from FromSoftware and George R. R. Martin. In terms of debate, influence, and general scale, this is the game of the year thus far. You ascend from the lowest of the low as a Tarnished to become the Elden Lord, taking on degenerative demi-gods in epic boss encounters like no other in the 100-hour plus open world. To be sure, it's a difficult game, but one that provides such delight and return for your efforts that it's unrivaled in the media.
SIFU
Martial arts fans are in for a treat. Sifu, a new action beat 'em up set in modern-day China from developer Sloclap, lets players take control of a young kung fu student on a road of revenge to avenge their father's murder. The roguelike is based on old arcade games and needs patience and determination to learn its combat systems, which has been well received by those who have invested in the indie darling. What's nice about Sifu is that it doesn't overstay its welcome either, with the main campaign taking only 10 hours to complete, with additional challenges available for those who desire them.
HORIZON FORBIDDEN WEST
Horizon Forbidden West is the biggest PS5 blockbuster right now, pushing protagonist Aloy to new heights (both literally and metaphorically) in this superb action RPG. Not to add, it's breathtakingly beautiful. No, seriously, it's one of the most beautiful games ever ever grace a console. Horizon Forbidden West proved to be one of the most ambitious games in recent years, with increased gameplay geared to help take down the world's colossal mechanical machines, as well as a gripping plot that undoubtedly goes places you wouldn't expect.
LEGO STAR WARS: THE SKYWALKER SAGA
Never, ever, ever tell me the odds. After a lengthy delay and questions about whether it could live up to the promise, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was released in early April to amazing reviews and a staggering 3.2 million sales in its first two weeks, making it the most successful Lego game launch ever.
What's more, why shouldn't it be? Who doesn't want to go on a Star Wars adventure with Luke, Han, Leia, Obi-Wan, Rey, Chewie, and over 370 more characters? The ability to go through all nine Star Wars films in any order, from The Phantom Menace to The Rise of Skywalker, is the main draw here. This is much more than simply a love letter to a galaxy far, far away, with Easter eggs galore and the most classic Star Wars sequences reproduced in Lego form with a funny twist.
UNCHARTED: LEGACY OF THIEVES COLLECTION
Is that Tom Holland? Thank you, but no. I simply need Nathan Drake in the form of Nolan North. The Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which includes Nathan Drake's search for pirate captain Henry Avery's treasure in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and thief for hire Chloe Frazer's search for the Tusk of Ganesh in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, is a graphically enhanced upgrade that any newcomer should play.
Two fantastic Indiana Jones-style adventure films with spectacular cinematic narrative and real, complex characters – not simply Mark Wahlberg with a moustache. These are still some of the best video games you can play today, whether it's climbing a massive clock tower in the middle of Madagascar or dodging gunfire while dashing through India's rooftops.
