Why Physician Assisted Suicide Should be Easier to Access

Physician assisted suicide is very fresh on my mind lately, due in large part to recent events that have transpired with my dear heart and one of Steemit's finest, Laura Lemons. I have always supported this in theory but am now thinking of it in a much more serious light.

NOTE: I ONLY endorse this as an absolute last result.

I will discuss this as it relates to:

  1. Terminally physically or fatally injured person
  2. Person with severe depression and/or mental illness.

For terminally ill patients (i.e. cancer, heart failure, trauma victims, etc), I definitely endorse this - that is, only after all other alternatives have been explored and exhausted. On the grounds that; the fatally injured or extremely ill person is mentally competent to make the decision or has legally signed papers permitting a spouse, close friend or family member make this decision in the event they are unable to advocate for themselves.

For the mentally ill, within reason, again, every attempt for resolution is explored or exhausted. Past medical history will be taken heavily into consideration with particular emphasis on past suicide attempts or ideations. NOTE mental illness does not equal mental incompetence. The person should be given a mandatory 48-72 hour lapse for re- consideration purposes. During this time frame, depending on the individual's preference counseling or ministry services should be available 24/7 for this patient.

I stress mental competence because many death row inmates have performed poorly on mental competency testing prior to their death and still receive the penalty.

Back to the mentally ill (severe depression, PTSD, etc, etc) - these people would benefit greatly from this being a more easily accesible option.

WHY?:

  • Person experiences a calm and peaceful departure versus the more violent and painful effects of a shooting, hanging, etc
  • Physician assisted suicide would cut back on, what I would surmise to be, a huge admission & re-admission rate in hospitals worldwide having to tend to the wounds of an unsuccessful attempt. Instead, those beds would be available for another sick person in need.
  • Having been through the unsuccesful attempts with, what is now two people (RIP Laura), that both ended up successful in the attempts later; it would lessen the pain my selfish ass is experiencing now that they are gone. Did I just mention me....? Oops, I meant their family and friends. You would know their final days would've been much less stressful and less additional physical pain and/or mental anguish. I already pointed out unsuccessful attempts are a problem. Most people try again. Furthermore, many suicide attempts are performed "incorrectly " leading to a slow painful death. The person may have decided to change their mind but now can't and lies in agony - leaving this world as we know it in a drawn out death process.

As I have mentioned, all other treatments need to have been thoroughly examined. I believe people in enough actual PAIN to lead them to take their own life should at least have a more humane way to do it. ♡♡♡

I visit a care home weekly. I was there today. The one I go to is the 3rd best rated one in Dublin. Visited 13 in total and was so lucky to get a place here as the others you would not board your dog in them, dreadful places.

I think we need a "living will" law. At the age of 50 everyone still alive must by law visit a care home and spend a few hours there before signing. You can then sign Yes or No.

Yes, In the event I become incapacitated or suffer from Parkinsons or Dementia I wish to be put into a care home. I confirm I wish to have the full monty, the whole shebang, bathing, being brought to the toilet including ass wiping, dressing, spoon feeding etc.
OR
No, in the event I become incapacitated and I have lost my mind and do not know who I am or who anyone else is, please put me to sleep.

There is madness going on, insanity. Many of the inmates in the homes never receive a visitor, no one cares about them. They are vegetables and if there was any sanity they should be put to sleep and out of their misery.

It costs the state Euro 5600 per patient per month, very few contribute. Every country is close to bankruptcy and cannot afford this madness. It is a total waste of time and endless money.

I have wanted to die many times in my life but most of the time I am glad I am still around. I do think people in pain should have the right to say "I HAVE HAD ENOUGH" and should be put to sleep at their request.

I think it will come to an end one day when people realise that life is not special and we are two a penny and breed like rabbits.

I disagree life isn't special.... however, i do agree about the bs in nsg homes. It is sad to see it. I have been working in nursing homes for a while (hospital currently), don't agree with people being "stuck away" just because their family no longer wants to "deal with "them. I despise but all one can do is try to improve the residents quality of life that is what i do in physical therapy.

Wow, it's an interesting concept, if we think nothing of euthanizing an animal who is in pain, suffering, or cannot sustain itself, when we consider animals our companions, in some situations, our only source of love and acceptance, but we cannot fathom the idea of allowing another human being to make the choice to be euthanized or have a directive to end their lives? It's a very taboo topic but I wanted to applaud you for addressing it. ☆

That's some good insight. I didn't think of it from the angle of putting poor Fido down so he doesn't suffer. Man's best friend....

I so agree. I prepared years ago a health directive that stated no drugs or machines that would prolong my life if I am terminally ill. However from observing the experience of relatives, I realize that decisions will be manipulated by the medical profession in order to squeeze every last dollar out of the patient before they pass on. As I approach my seventies, I think about this more often. I thought about it a couple of weeks ago as I lovingly held my old terminally ill dog as he gently and peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge with the helping guidance of the compassionate vet.

Sorry about your dog. And yes the medical system is entirely too focused on money. Sad but true

If you visit a nursing home weekly as I do, you'd definitely be in favour of voluntary euthanasia. Seeing the pointless suffering of many who have been abandoned by their families, who exist only to suffer until their pain wracked bodies finally give up. What is it all for?

I have worked in them for years so I get it.

I applaud you. Hard hard work emotionally and physically and if it's anything like Ireland, very poorly paid.

Depends on which area your in obviously. I was paid adequately for my job in PT. But, i know many of the nursing/ancillary people weren't

this is allowed in some states for terminally ill patients. My home state happens to be one of them.

I knew some states had it. What state are you referring to?

Washington

I have always been slightly torn on this issue. Depending on whether I see it from the point of view of "what if it was me who wanted to go" or "what if it was someone I loved who wanted to go".

But then I realise that that's just the selfish part of me coming out.

Yep. But the selfish you wouldn't want them having to hang themselves....i feel you though it's a touchy subject

That's very true

Interestingly enough I've been thinking about this over the last 24hours after watching a film called "Me Before You" which has assisted death at the end.

I do believe it should be a legal option. Keeping someone alive against their wishes, when they are suffering just doesn't make any sense to me. A human 'last resort' option should be available to all. Emphasis on last resort as you have said.

Exactly!!
