Absence of Love Results in Death

in psychology •  8 years ago  (edited)

"I'm definitely a romantic, I don't think life is really worth all the pain and effort and struggling if you don't have somebody that you love very much." (Chet Baker)

Freud thought that all humans are mainly driven by a passion of love and a passion of death. Baker considered himself as a romatic (strong passion for love).

"You don't know what love is, until you've learned the meaning of the blues, until you've loved a love you've had to lose." (Chet Baker)

Bakers understanding of love seems to be the terrible pain which is a result of the inability to love but not finally love itself (his meaning of the blues).

"I soon became aware that there wasn't enough time or opportunity to kiss all the girls in the world. The best thing is to stay cool - just be choosy and wait for the right opportunity." (Chet Baker)

His music, altering relationships and his lifelong, destructive drug addiction was probably an expression of the tremendeus struggle for love and against (or for) death.

Chet Baker was found dead in 1988 below his hotel room in Amsterdam. Although it's not clear what really happened, he probably died due to risky behaviour, intoxication or suicide. In any case there is evidence of a strong death drive (and love drive).

I'm suggesting that love and death are strongly connected and that the subjective abscence of the feeling to be loved or the inability to love must lead to destruction or death.
