Ditch Your Addictions #3: Digital Addiction

I want to talk about this Digital Addiction that took over the whole world, starting from kids to even old people, not missing anyone that has access to the internet. This is a little different from the other types of addiction because it only happens in people’s minds, the substances like sugar or nicotine being replaced with the feedback from other people.

But it does work the same because the feedback people receive through likes on Facebook or comments send signals to your brain to release dopamine that, again, will make you feel good. The main problem with this is that it’s powerful mainly that people have no idea it’s happening.

How it works

The psychology behind it is that everyone wants to be appreciated by other people, because looking at the past before technology, it’s something normal to want to be liked by your community. On cave man’s time, the feedback was crucial because if you were doing something wrong, you would’ve got your ass kicked from the tribe, and no one could survive alone, in the woods.

But if you were doing something right, you were getting rewarded, appreciated by the community thus your brain would release dopamine and those things are hardwired into our brains even now.

At the moment, this is out of control, especially that every kid wants to be famous like some celebrities from TV and because they receive hundreds of likes from unknown people on Instagram makes them think they are famous and appreciated by their communities, reacting precisely like the cave man.

Ditch it

The social media like Facebook were designed to make people always come back to them to get their dose of dopamine through notifications. Opening the fridge to see if there’s something new got now replaced with opening your social media to see if you have notifications and the thing is that there’s always something new to be seen; thus you will always want to come back to them.

And I’ve always seen people checking out a shitload of platforms just to get their fix of dopamine, and if they don’t receive it, they seem sadder, the hell, this even happened to me a few times.

Another problem with platforms like Facebook is that they make you feel like your life is boring and because everyone that’s posting stuff there makes sure to be only perfect pictures at fancy events. Thus, if you’re staying home on a Friday night working for your future, you feel like you’re missing out on something because they have fun and you don’t.

Conclusion

I understood this a long time ago, and if you still appreciate your free time and mind, I advise you to do as I did. If you don’t want to delete your accounts because you may still find the chat useful as I do, you could just to disable your feed, so no posts appear when you log in, so you can’t directly see their shitty lives anymore.

I don’t get why people would even spend their time on social platforms like Facebook or Instagram if they are already on Steem and they can invest their spare time here, so maybe sometime in the future, they will be able to have a better life.

People are taking the social media addictions to a new level. I once overhead my students bragging about how many followers and the rate at which their followers are increasing, they were so passionate about the subject which made me wonder what value this is adding to their lives.

I wrote a post yesterday about how people are letting others filtered selfies and plastic lives on these social media define their lives influence their ways and affect their confidence when they could not not measure up to the 'standard' on these platforms.

Thank heaven for Steemit and other value adding platform. Nothing about all of them interest me no more. I just hope many people see the light and stop wasting their money(it cost money to be online always), time and lives away on frivolities.

Huh, I always hear girls bragging about their follows or likes and indeed, they seem so into it, from the outside it almost looks like they are crazy.

I'll try to check out that post, it got me hooked. ;)

Steem is a life savior for sure. It's not even that they spend money on being online but just the fact that is wasting their time, which in the end is limited. Crazy world.

I haven't seen or read from you like always in a short while. I hope you totally fine friend.

The psychology behind it is that everyone wants to be appreciated by other people,

Definitely. There are a lot of people like that; heroes on the net, jerks in real life. I came across an advice during my early days on steemit, which I've found very valuable:

be yourself!

You can't get too much dopamine rush by being yourself. That's natural!

And the part about people making other people feel self-deprecated, that's totally true. I just wish people'd understand that most of those things are fake.

Mainstream media has fuckt us up with silly contents that make us feel worthless all these while, too bad that with social media--over which we have relative control--we can't seem to do better.

That's the best advice one can get both in life and on Steem. I am trying to be myself as much as I can, keeping that edge intact even if as I get bigger, it seems harder, but it's still there. The edge is not gone yet, haha.

To be honest, the last time I felt FOMO was in November when SteemFest2 was happening because all of my friends from here were having lots of fun there, but besides that, I can't remember. I will make sure not to miss SF3. :D

Lol. It does get harder as one gets bigger. Keep grinding, bro. FOMO is real. I'm sure you'll be the bomb at SF3.

Haha, I sure as hell hope you're right, SF3 will be huge.

It seems more and more that online activities like gaming, porn and even social media are being seen and categorized as addicting behaviors.

I like in your post, how you discussed how online activities like social media influence a persons dopamine reward systems. I think you are spot on in that assessment.

Since much of our lives nowadays are spent online, I think that these activities will be studied more and more by psychologists and other members of the scientific community so our understanding of them will increase significantly in the next few years.

Anyway, Nice post!

Thank you, I spend a lot of my time online so I think a few more studies on this ecosystem would come in handy especially that most people are just abusing the technology. :D

yeah agreed

how you getting along with quittung you sugar consumption? Its damn hard for me... am tellin you... almost lost track this very morning when was still sleepy and went to get a coffee...

The hardest part is to remember about it, but since the cravings appear only at certain times, it should be easier. I haven't mentioned this, but I tried to quit sugar a few days before making this post, and in one morning I was so sleepy that I forgot about it and ate some cookies. :))

But so far it went well, we'll see more about it in one week, lol.

hahah ... I can totally feel ya bro ... hardest time a day is for me in the morning to even remember about it when being still sleep and heading to get a fresh brewed coffee... damn hard if you´re used to reply to the question how you like it not answer one & one, please ... LOL

Haha, let's make this big, I think more Steemians should join us. I'll make an update post about it next week. :D

yea, that wouldda be nice bro... some post maybe where the community should be letting us know how they keep on fighting/ stugglin & what´s their hardest obsticles to overcome...

Is difficult to give up at cookies and sweets. These are too good to give up

There are better things. ;)

Depinds

There's a quote I remember about why people get addicted to social media - they're after 'dings of psuedo pleasure'. Just about sums it up.

You might like this post I knocked up - how tech companies manipulate our behaviour. It starts...

Technology companies such as Apple, Facebook and Google have incorporated a range of design features into their mobile devices, operating systems and social media applications that make them addictive, which results in us spending longer online than we really want to, clicking on links we never intended to and making us more distracted, less rational and more impulsive than ever...

Although of course steemit is different! I think?!?

Hey, I just read your article. It's to the point, really showing how these social media platforms influence our thinking and actions. Thanks for that TED talk, I always like watching them. I just sent it to some of my friends that are too addicted to Snapchat; I love that part of the talk.

Your article got me hooked, it's 11 pm here right now, so I'll get some sleep soon, but I will read it tomorrow and tell you what I think about it, but I already love it. :D

Hey thanks, always happy to share, I want to write more on this platform too, just a matter of time, you know how it is!

Huh, yeah, I know what you mean, the time is so short sometimes; it's never easy to keep up with everything.

It's crazy how my two year old son reacts and how quickly he learns how to control electronics. I don't think he learns it quickly because he's smart (he does learn stuff quickly, but he picks up electronics at an entirely quicker pace), but because these companies have researched why sounds, layouts, etc. release the most dopamine.

We first noticed how addicting it is by watching the way he reacted when he heard the noise the TV and Xbox one made when turning on.

They are designed in a way that people can use the devices even if they have never used anything like it before, they are made somehow instinctual, or at least that was Steve's goal.

Yeah, the kids get hooked on these things faster.

I just got myself a brand new smartphone, it even has a 5MP cam, ( lol) it has none a single social network installed, unless we can consider Letgo and Keybase the social pages.
I just don't see a point. I am ok about building the following on Twitter, because it is all about the advertising so it is a useful thing, but the rest... Just, no.

Lucky you, I bought a new phone a few months ago but it came with Facebook and some other shits preinstalled, and I can't uninstall them. :(

I kinda like Twitter actually, from the standpoint of cryptocurrency news because all the big projects release their information there, I should maybe check those out more often cause it may help me at trading. :)

I lament the loss of days before Facebook. People used to go out to bars and find interesting conversation in each other. People used to have board game nights and only be involved in the energy own that room.

I want to host more "no phone" parties

Yeah, good old times. I will steal that idea; I think I'll host a "no phone" party.

I try to stay away from my phone and computer as much as possible. I was getting really good at it until Steemit started to take over my life though. That is the only thing that keeps me on the technology wave. lol

Haha, I know what you mean. Most of my online time goes to Steem actually, it's addictive but in a good way. But even so, I don't regret it at all.

Same here. Learning and growing everyday is awesome.

It is amazing to see how social media platforms are getting people attention, talking about its benefits and the likes.
You get to learn new things everyday, understand the way things are done in other part of the world, meet new people, get empowered by peoples idea just by surfing through the internet in the comfort of your home. The most interesting thing surfing the internet and getting paid for learning and having fun. This is why i love STEEMIT....

Learning and getting paid is the best combination, indeed. Sometimes, Steem is a way of funding your improvement and development of new skills.

I like you post

I joined Steemit in November since then I barely use Facebook, I use only Facebook Messenger to keep in touch with my friends! I don't have Instagram and I use with Twitter only for news related to cryptocurrency!
BEST decision of 2017: Joining Steemit!!

Feel that, I'm in the same situation as you are, it's just amazing. I joined in June, but I'm not using Facebook for over one year. I should get back on Twitter there are a few coins I want to follow, but I don't think I'll do it anytime soon.

What do you do when you've tried to ditch addictiins for so long but it aint working...
