Why do we remember our name? Where we live? What is your parent’s name? What is your friend’s name? The simple answer is because we have something called memory. Memory refers to the processes, which are used to acquire, store, retain and later retrieve the same information. Memory is a faculty, wherein the sensations, impressions, and ideas are stored and then recalled. Our brain works like a computer. Initially, the brain puts the important information into ‘files’, and when required or when you remember something, that file opens.

Memory is one cognitive function; we use the most in our daily routine. We use memory to store different types of information, for eg- an appointment, phone number, what you had for breakfast, which movie you saw last…etc. Also, memory plays a role in other activities like reading, calculations, reasoning, etc. Sometimes we use memory without being aware that it is being used. Memory is an integral part of our existence still, it is vaguely understood.

In my next post, I would explore some important terms related to memory.

If you guys want me to write on something, in particular, do let me know. I would be more than happy to write about it!
