Frozen shoulder is common in youthful age in my area because of how they over use their shoulders in some physical activities just to earn a living. When I saw this contest I was very much interested atleast learning this therapy will be of help to relief some people that are close to me. I appreciate this contest, thank you for your teaching techniques on this topic.

Understanding frozen shoulder

Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis is disorder of the shoulder bones making it stiff and painful. Preventing you from moving the shoulder. This usually occurs when the strong connective tissue that surrounds the shoulder joint capsule becomes very thick, stiff and inflamed. Therefore the more pains you feels, the less you can move your shoulders and this causes you capsules to thicken and really tight.

Frozen Shoulder has different stages depending on the severity of the pains it can be primary it can be secondary it all depends on the causes of it.

Frozen shoulder can be frustrating and affect our daily activities, so it is good we pay attention to ourselves, identify it and work on it.

Obviously, frozen shoulder only occurs in ages between 40 and 60 but younger people can still feel it now due to overuse of the shoulder or engaging in physical activities that hurt the shoulders really much it will affect the bone capsules or even sleeping posture.

How I would diagnose a frozen shoulder

Although I'm not a physiotherapist but I've worked with them and I learned from watching them. So if I see a person complaining of shoulder pains,

A. Ask questions;

  • I will ask the person to explain where exactly he/she feels the pains to take note of the region to examine how debt the pains is.

  • I will also ask when it started to know the duration and rule out wrong posture and overused of the shoulder.

  • Ask activities done recently that hasn't been done by the person so as to detect what could possibly be the cause and to know if it is Primary or secondary shoulder pains.

B. Perform task/physical examinations

Ask the person to rotate the shoulder so see if there will be a little movement. Raising of the two arms or performing any other movement task also helps to detect movement then I can also do some physical checks on the person shoulder. So when the person is unable to rotate or raises the shoulder, feels severe pains in reaction to your physical examination then diagnosis is made due to observation.

C. Injection test;

Due to what is noted on the patient physical task, anesthetic injection is given in the shoulder to numb the area so they can better judge your range of motion.

D. Laboratory test;

X-rays of the shoulder is required to make sure that there’s no other problem, in the shoulder. A conclusion and diagnosis is done after the x-ray test results is out for confirmation.

Practice of 3 exercises for frozen shoulder

Cross Body Stretch; I did this by crossing one of my arm on the other side of my shoulder then I used my hand to support the other arm from the elbow then I moved it gradually front and back without moving my body.

Shoulder Circles; I did this by rotating on my both shoulders either moving it to the front or to the back.

Scapula Retraction; I did in a standing position with my hands placed and my leg put apart. Then I squeezed my shoulder blades together while keeping my chest open and down towards the spine and my lower abs engaged. I repeated the process for some minutes.

Watch my video on how I did the three exercises

My review performing this exercise with a patient.

I performed it on myself after few days of intensive workout and my recent job that requires sitting for hours typing on a computer really affect my back mostly my shoulders and I feel som pains. So with this I felt I needed to carry out the exercise as I saw this contest.

I actually feel some numbness and stiffness and pains in my right shoulders down to my arms and I guess it is from the workout I did few days ago although I stretch after each workout but I was still feeling some pains. So I carried out this exercise and I'm really fine now because I was relieve after doing it I was very okay I felt my shoulder needed it's at this point.

Observations

Task 1 (2.3/3)
You have shared enough knowledge about frozen shoulder it's causes, and types of frozen shoulder. But you didn't share number of stages, and it's phases. You need to add a bit more depth about frozen shoulder. I appreciate your effort.

Task 2 (2.8/3)
In the second question, you tell us about the physical examination of frozen shoulder patient, medical history, laboratory test, injections for treatment and ask general history about patient. But it would be better if you add the 1 or 2 special tests like speed test, yergason test. You answer this question well. Good.

Task 3 (3.8/4)
You try the cross body stretch, shoulder circles, and scapula retraction in a good way. It looks like you enjoy performing exercises especially shoulder circles. Remember always apply heating pad before performing these exercises. I appreciate your efforts.

Overall you made a good try to answer all the questions except question 1. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from any shoulder pathology or you suffer from such condition. Thank you.
