What would it be like if you were blind? I'm visually impaired. A little over a year ago, I suffered from a retinal detachment. After multiple surgeries, I still have vision in my affected eye (my right eye), but it is of very limited practical use. Basically, I am functioning by using my left eye.
Even in my left I eye I've got strong cataract so that'll require surgery as well. Despite my poor vision, I've managed to achieve a lot because we live during a time period where one can get the right glasses or contact lenses that can help you see better. Anyway, enough about me and let's talk about Haben Girma.
I should not be complaining at all because Haben Girma is DEAF and BLIND - both! Can you just imagine not having both these senses? Even though she cannot see and cannot hear anything, she has managed to attend college and has earned a law degree from Harvard. Imagine that!
How is she doing this? Well, I won't get into all the details here because you can easily google that. Basically, she has got technology to assist her because you can kind of type on like this typewriter thingy and she places her fingers on this thing that converts that typed message into braille.
That's a very simple explanation. I suggest you watch her video on YouTube and google her. She delivers some very impressive speeches as an advocate for the disabled. In my opinion, she is the modern day Helen Keller. She's truly an inspiration for us all.
