Quantum tunneling

in quantum •  7 years ago

This video shows an incident wave packet propagating towards a potential barrier. According to quantum tunneling, the "particle" (packet) has a finite probability of transmitting through this barrier, which the video demonstrates. The numerics is based upon solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and a half-step time algorithm. Note that the potential barrier is scaled for convenience, so in reality it is actually 500 000 times larger. According to my calculations, the packet has approximately 90% chance of transmission the first time it hits the barrier.
