I originally posted this on my blog in Spanish, but I liked it and decided to translate it to share it with more people.
Each day that passes convinces me more than the reality that awaits us after the pandemic is not going to be simple, I thought about comparing it with what happened after the great Spanish Flu at the beginning of the 20th century, but I'm not sure if that way.
It is true that as a pandemic, the current coronavirus, shares similarities with the one that marked history, but we are in a much more inter-connected and inter-dependent world, so the economic effects on the production of primary goods and services I think it is going to be very significant and dangerously long-lasting.
I read an article that said that in their positive aspects, the pandemics of previous centuries had forced transformations and changes in societies, giving us an example of how they promoted the fall of feudalism and the rise of the bourgeoisie as a pre-eminent social group. To a large extent, I share the analysis, but not the optimism of whoever wrote it, you see, the person who wrote that does not seem to want to pay attention to the human cost that these changes had, not only due to the deaths during the spread and the period of high lethality of the disease but because of the destruction of the existing economic system and the time it took to stabilize things for most countries.
So, yes, I am waiting for this current pandemic to bring us changes, including the rise of telework, which for quite some time was an option, but that will also mark the notorious Digital Divide and will create a new way of segregation, discrimination, and classism ... You may think that I am too pessimistic, but it is simply that when reviewing the historical records, I have thought that beyond the statistics and balance of benefits, there was a lot of human pain and social suffering involved.
In short, the future does not stop and it turns out that it is not for everyone. It will be time that will determine the real effect of the things we see today, we can only glimpse and build scenarios of what is likely to happen.
