Samuel Taylor Coleridge was an English critic, philosopher and poet of Romanticism. The ballad "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" published in 1798 is his most famous work. After his father's death, he was sent to a boarding school in London, where he distinguished himself as a good pupil. He had to struggle with rheumatism at an early age, so he began to take the opium tincture Laudanum. This would later lead to addiction. He was not only known as an excellent speaker but also as an astute theorist. Especially his lectures on Shakespeare were extremely popular.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge war ein englischer Kritiker, Philosoph und Dichter der Romantik. Die 1798 veröffentlichte Ballade „The Rime of the Ancient Mariner“ ist sein bekanntestes Werk. Nach dem Tod des Vaters wurde er auf ein Londoner Internat geschickt, wo er sich als guter Schüler hervortat. Er hatte schon früh mit Rheumatismus zu kämpfen, weshalb er begann, die Opiumtinktur Laudanum einzunehmen. Dies sollte später zur einer Abhängigkeit führen. Er war nicht nur als ausgezeichneter Redner, sondern auch als scharfsinniger Theoretiker bekannt. Besonders seine Vorlesungen über Shakespeare waren außerordentlich beliebt.
