As a former fan of vile, man-hating, racist, pseudo-feminist Lena Dunham I retract my fan status, entirely.

I first saw GIRLS when it came out 5 years ago.

source:

I immediately loved it and watched it faithfully every week. I found the characters in GIRLS shallow but thought they were comically so in a way that it was meant to shine light on rich, privileged young adults but after all that has surfaced, and resurfaced, over the past few days I fear I was highly mistaken. This is likely just a barely-fictional account of Lena's actual life and her real thoughts on things like racism. In the episode where Lena was having a cringe-worthy conversation with her black boyfriend I laughed, a lot, because it was SO over-the-top that I thought it was pure satire but now, I am not so sure.

I had loved GIRLS and felt it was a great accomplishment for a woman of 25 to have written, directed, and starred in a hit show. I also admired her for how she was raw, and vulnerable. She allowed herself to be put under scrutiny and wore a lack of clothes in spite of people fat-shaming her. These are the reasons I loved her and I didn't really dig too deep in finding out about her personal life so I felt she was an intelligent, decent human. But recently so much evidence to the contrary is surfacing.

Lena Dunham is a man-hating pseudo-feminist.

If you haven't yet heard Lena Dunham was interviewed recently by Amy Schumer and, get this, she sat next to Odell Beckham Jr. at some fancy event and he said nothing to her, he was actually on his phone. So, Lena goes on a long rant telling Amy EXACTLY what sort of anti-Lena things he was thinking in his fucking head. Um? -_-

"AS: I left so early. When did you leave?
LD: I attempted to grind my ass on Michael B. Jordan for an additional twenty minutes and then left right after you.
I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards. He was like, “That’s a marshmallow. That’s a child. That’s a dog.” It wasn’t mean — he just seemed confused.
The vibe was very much like, “Do I want to fuck it? Is it wearing a … yep, it’s wearing a tuxedo. I’m going to go back to my cell phone.” It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie. I was like, “This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes.”
AS: You were dressed like a boy, and you looked sexy, and I really appreciated you showing me your tits several times."

So, that's fucking interesting. That is a pretty colorful conversation you had with yourself there Lena. That man has no obligation to talk to you and you have no idea what was going on in his head when he glanced at and then DIDN'T FUCKING SAY A SINGLE WORD TO YOU.

Oh speaking of which, maybe he had noticed your racist tweet from years back?

You know, the one where you refer to African Americans as rodents?

"Just found my "creativity journal" from 2005. It begins: "I dreamed I was a prostitute and that I molested a little African American rodent""

Wow, if I had ever seen a case of "shut the fuck up and don't say that horrible thing out loud." But she wanted to be edgy I guess. She is probably the same self-centered, casually racist, entitled brat she plays in GIRLS. I am now pretty certain it is just her, playing herself, in a show about her and her shitty views.

Oh, also, she abused her younger sister.

I was unsure of how I felt when I read she did something with her baby sister's vagina when she was 6 because it seemed more like weird but innocent curiosity but then I read quotes from her, admittedly, non-fiction book where she talks about her kid-sister sleeping in her bed with her until she was 17 and talks about masturbating next to her while she sleeps, pressed against her body. Yeah, that's...no...there is literally no way I can ignore what a piece of shit she is at this point. Racist, check. Abuser, check. Oh, and voting for Hillary.

I don't need to stoop to mocking her appearance to illustrate what a jerk she is....

I think one of the reasons I liked Lena initially was, aside from loving GIRLS, because I saw her being constantly attacked and body shamed and I never saw much about WHY people hated her aside from her being supposedly ugly, fat, and not wearing "enough" clothes in public. That maybe made me feel protective of her and made me think she was brave for brazenly continuing to be unapologetically herself. But in reality, she is a highly insecure, pseudo-feminist that fetishizes black men and treats men in a way that she would be outraged if the genders were reversed.

I will now be watching GIRLS in the way I watch Roman Polanski movies. I will completely separate the piece of shit creator from the creation.

This is honestly upsetting being as I was a huge fan of hers and defended her and spoke highly of her and her work. I was blind to the type of person she really is.

Calling out the 100% fabricated "conversation" she had with O'Dell Beckham is brilliant! It does make me wonder what horrible things people are thinking about me when they are paying absolutely no attention to me... oh wait, maybe they are just busy with people they actually know. Never mind.

hahahahahaha. Right? I can't even wrap my head around that. WTF.

What's really scary is that with most of show business and stardom/fame we only see the public personas. Most successful people in the spotlight learn how to act very well even when not on set.
They appear to be almost perfect, saying the right things, looking good, getting so much attention and praise...
Yet the more you really find out what kind of people many of the politicians, movie stars and athletes are the more you realize they are not really roll Models at all.
I hope a lot more people seriously consider what they are supporting and also become
More aware of the truth rather than be awed by the show.

She definitely seemed a bit harsh and not perfect but she sold herself as someone for equality and sold the whole body positivity shit and really she is racist, and hates and fetishizes men which makes her the opposite of a feminist. I am aware of celebrities often times being assholes, they are human and I have never been one to read celeb gossip/idolize them/act like they are super human. She was an exception for me, she touched me and I feel pretty deceived. I just wanted to do my part and expose her for what she is. There are clearly better role models to have, we shouldn't look to Hollywood actresses but, I admit, I was fooled by this one.

Yes I feel for you and know there millions of not more out there who are also fooled.
Thankfully you realize it and you are sharing it here to help others be more aware and re evaluate life.
Good job!

thanks for sharing

She had a privileged upbringing, and her success is largely a product of her parents' success... She's a pretty good example of white feminism.

She most certainly is, I completely agree. I always knew her privileged life had to do with her success but I didn't look into her enough to realize just what an awful person she is and how entitled she is. I have 0 respect for her and she is damaging to have as a face of feminism.

@lauralemons

I have just found a new level of respect for a person.
I had no idea this level of respect was within me.

Your post took an incredible amount of courage and frankly I'm beaming with pride because you are a person I know, even if only by her writings.

Never known that feeling before. Thank you for showing me that!

Sometimes the most courageous act we can ever undertake is to realize that our heros are flawed. To recognize that not only are they not perfect, but that there is nothing particularly important about any of them, other than the status we gave them.

You just demonstrated to the world that you have found your real power and your real voice. A voice that came through so loud and so clear, I and many others may need a new screen because you broke through it.

I'm proud of you, for whatever that's worth. It's not a term I use a lot. Here it's well deserved.

The Roman Polanski comment hits home for me as well. The movie "The Pianist" is amazing. The first hour does a fantastic job of quickly and concretely showing how the mistreatment of the Jews was a gradual and horrifying process. I just have to separate him from the work.

The pianist is amazing and I also really, really, really like "Carnage". I can't not like his work but I definitely do not like him.

I'd like to think that outgrowing people you once respected or admired is a sign of adulthood.

Eh, perhaps. I mean, this is just a case of her presenting herself as an entirely different person than she is which is the case with a ton of celebrities I know. I just don't like when people like this are in the public eye screaming about "feminism" and having young girls admire them. She is not a feminist in any way. She just hates men. (And black people) -_-

I was "meh" about her (probably because I'm not particularly interested in celebrities and had never seen her show. I became a fan as a result of her publishing initiative (Lenny) even though I had heard about her abuse story and was sickened by it. This last episode--her ridiculously self-involved, racist and man-hating diatribe--absolutely killed any admiration I had previously held for her. I think her stardom has gotten to her head.

I definitely feel like stardom got to her head, bad. She was probably already entitled and had shitty ideas but once she became a celebrity she seemed to start thinking it was a great idea to voice her shitty racist feelings and really seems to have a huge ego. I went from "meh" to loving her because of GIRLS, to "meh" when I heard some kinda sketchy things, to really disliking her with this last stunt and the racist tweet that surfaced. I think I read something about her falsely accusing someone of rape which I need to definitely look into. Because that is fucked. She is just a total phony. -_-

Thank you. I'm so sick of people praising her as some kind of feminist hero.

Celebrities are just like everyone else. Some of them are decent people. Some of them are neutral and some of them are out and out sociopaths who will do whatever they need to to serve their own agendas.
