A small Reddit change that is making me quit - and an interesting personal Steemit statistic I found today

in rant •  8 years ago  (edited)

As most of you know, I love to curate posts. Even before Steemit I used to upvote posts on Reddit, browse through the 'new' section and look for great content early and if you had something funny or clever to say at the same time you commented and often those comments received many votes from other readers. That's a big reason why my Karma used to look like this:

Yes, I used the word used cause now with the new change of giving users their own profile pages they for some reason decided to merge together Link Karma and Comment Karma. Making it look like this and basically telling their users that we don't really give a shit about your preferences.

and yes, I did check if it was changeable in the settings. This pisses me off a lot cause I know how many Reddit accounts just used to spam links in subreddits, didn't care if it was re-posts, content that doesn't belong to them or was just spam that would make curator's days harder. They literally just submitted links across the internet onto Reddit for the sake of gaining Karma, as if it was Steem Power that actually has value.

I hated everything about those users who just spammed for the sake of receiving karma, even if is just imaginary points it was still something that you'd check up on now and then and somehow incentivized you to do better. Now they are basically just telling everyone that spammers are equal as commentators. Then again this shouldn't surprise me much cause the one thing they care is probably as long as traffic keeps flowing, doesn't matter because of what. Doesn't matter if the content is from some other site or belongs to another person, as long as the readers find it on Reddit and stay there. To make sure they stay there its not even allowed to link sources to the original creator who's work you just shared.

See the big difference there between Steemit and Reddit?

With @steemcleaners and @cheetah we do the best to catch content stealers, plagiarists and ID thieves. We watch out who we give rewards to so that the reputation level after our name means something, along with the Steem Power you earn with it.

I've been on the verge of quitting Reddit ever since I stumbled upon Steemit. Having been early on Reddit (first as a lurker) and having a 6 year old account maybe that was a big reason to why I saw the potential and knew that with this even bigger incentive it won't take too long til the platform becomes golden. I remained on Reddit cause it still had a big user-base and at the same time as I was using it as normal it would also let me compare it to Steemit in many different ways and I saw the improvements our platform has from many different perspectives.

I am pretty sure I will not be posting actively on Reddit anymore, probably just using it as a sharing site for mine and others Steemit posts just like how I use Twitter nowadays.

//rant over

On a brighter note, I've always wanted to know more statistics about my Curation here on Steemit. As Reddit isn't open-source or saves your actions as transactions on a public block-chain, it was hard to tell many times why a post or comment of mine got downvoted. This has been a huge problem for Reddit in forever, looking at r/bitcoin and the amount of control and manipulation that happens there is ridiculous. Yet no one can or wants to do anything about it.

I knew the website Steemdb.com created by @jesta had some really interesting stats but it would only show the top 100 curators, that list only showed top curators in amounts of SP they had earned. Thanks to SP Delegation I have been able to see my own name on that list now and that gave me the extra statistics I've been searching for some time - amount of Curation Rewards and number of Unique Authors I have voted on.

This screenshot is taken from monthly curators which can be found here, I took a quick look on the list to see if there were any others with a higher number and were manual curators but I didn't find one.

This might be a bit braggy but currently its one of my most important personal statistic which I am following, since my curation has been about distributing votes as wide and fairly as possible while focusing on newcomers and their starting Steemit adventure.

Thanks for reading.

PS. for anyone referencing to the combined Karma with "on Steemit all comments and posts only count as one anyway" - remember that's just cause the Steemit Front-end shows that, with a blockchain the possibility is there to count them separately and the site Steemitboard.com does that (which is where my Footer Icons are from).

we will continue to impress more and more reddit power users, their "followers" will folow them here to steemit in massive subreddit Exodeses when SubReddit mods start to ask for money from Redits corporate ofices, they will respond wil "firing" their un paid "workers" and attempting to ba, delete, or "archive" popular subreddits to the point that they will siply be google searching for a popular CENSORSHIP FREE DECEENTRALIZED platform and ONLY steemit will show up! We have a PERFECt track record when it comes to censorship! Some people complain that "whales" covered up the "pizzagate" posts which is not true theres plenty of popular pizzagate posts here on steemit, and IF a whale "flags" a post it is not super influential like whenthey Upvote! And no one whae can take the ability of a user to make money off their post here! AND if you DONT like how much influence a whale might have, you just have to spend the money and get the steempower to become a whale yurself!

We have rules and if you dont like it, change them! It costs money but tere is NO other barrier to entry! ANYONE can join steemit and become a whale, OR just find someone whose already on steemit and power THEM up and have THEM do your bidding! Anyone would be willing to do that! And noone can take away a steemit account!

And if you WANTED to you could make your own steemit account without the developers permissions! youre just not smart enough!

I will admit it is suspicious that you ahve to "apply" for an account here on steemit.....I bellueve anyone even an ISIS terrorist or a pedophile should be able to openly join and have an ISIS or pedo account name and everything WITHOUT anyones permissions IF THIS TRULY WAS a decentralized platform.......the same way anyone can open a bitcoin wallet....how does that work? I have heard from steemit devs tat eventually anyone will eb abl to join steemit......

and as of now, IS there actually any "application" process review OR is it just some way to ensure peopel dont singup multipel accounts to abuse the system? You devs arent acually doing bacgroudn checks on us or anything? Anyone actualy can join steemit the waitiing list is just to do wth the rewards pool and giving everyone a little bit of free steepower to star with, right?

Like 4chan for example is more open thats temit where anyone can create an anonymous post, at anytime, without having to apply for an account

will steemit have something like this? where we can just opt for an anonymous steemit account that declines steem paouy but allows anonymous posting or commenting?

again i apologize if I am wrong in my assesment that its is not truley decentralized if there is any barrier to entry at all, especial like we have now with what seems to be an "application process" to join..

i LOVE this system i ALWAYS defend it and find myself defending it against youtube naysayers EVERYDAY now and I will KEEP defending it EVEN if the price of steem drops to a PENNY I would still be happy! I think thats why steemit will remain so successful the fact of how many people share that sentiment with me

You don't need anyone's permission to join the Steemit network:

I swear I post this link like five times a day....

Keep posting it as I just TRIED to resteem but cant fin resteem button i guess its too late to resteem it?
I still i upvoted! wow its up past the thousand dollar mark tats amazing for one post!
Oh i see its from @someguy123 not you welll u should create your own post that just reduces that post into one link! an explains how to do it for free since he is charging people for anonymity lol

Creating an account always costs money. Steem INC covers the cost of the "free" account they give you. That's why they ask for your phone number and/or other ID information, so someone can't get hundreds of "free" accounts from them.

The witnesses set something called an "account creation fee". Sorry I don't have the exact number at the moment but it tends to be something around 5-15 Steem, or 5 to 15 usd.

Right now, it costs 15 STEEM, which is roughly $13.50 - but it fluctuates depending on who's in the top 19, and when people change their prices.

lol this meme would infuriate @freebornangel

lol nice one :D

lol nice meme @neoxian

jajaja I love this one! JOCKER!

Reddit drives me crazy because of all the censorship. The political discussions over there are complete trash. How can you have a good discussion when anyone who challenges the opinion of the "group think" is banned? No thanks. I used to like it when it was the best option out there, thank God it isn't any more! :D

Yup, the hive mind is real there, and even if you dare speaking against something most others are for you get downvoted and silenced (yes it is under the reddiquette not to downvote discussions based on belief - but does anyone care? nope). Not to mention how easy it is to create multiple accounts there and because of the large userbase it makes it impossible for moderators who can see the activity follow smaller discussions and subreddits where they are abused to get their "thought" through in front of others. Imagine in how many ways this can be abused for monetary gain.

I remember when one of the most popular Redditors at one time u/Unidan was caught abusing botvotes in comments just to get more visibility on his own or silence others.

Its not even long ago that my content and comments keep getting shadow-deleted (shadow means I still see it but if I were to give you a direct link to the comment you'll see it as [deleted]-[deleted]).

Here on an open blockchain we see every action of every account with details to make it easier for us to tell if manipulation is happening or not.

Know about https://ceddit.com/ ?

reddit... forget it :D

lol yes, how I wish my Karma was SP instead or you know, had an actual bigger effect than random new user with 5 karma.

Me too :(

@igster in a comment here was talking about reddit account selling.

we should ask @steemit if we can retire our reddit accounts to them for SP.

that would be sweet :D I'd sell my account in a heartbeat.

Then again I wouldn't want to sell my Reddit account unless I know the other person and that he won't do any harm with it.

Steemit is a great platform. The kinds of content people often post reminds me of an earlier reddit before mass popularity, and some of the more niche subreddits like true reddit.

Currently, since I think most of us are interested in cryptocurrency, I think that the focus on these topics is nice and incredibly informative.

There are probably holes in steemit we will recognize once its mastered the way that reddit is. I know some users already exploit certain aspects of steemit. Hopefully it never becomes a science to engineer social marketing the way that reddit has become.

more niche subreddits like true reddit.

Exactly! Thanks, had totally forgotten about that subreddit!

This was an enlightening article. You invested a lot of time on Reddit to achieve those scores. Eventually I will learn more how to utilize Steemit better too. If you have any tips how to do better here on Steemit beside additional new posts please let me know.

Thank you

Engage just like you are doing now. :)

Thank you for the affirmation. :)

GREAT PIECE OF INFORMATION AND A BEAUTIFULLY WELL DESERVED RANT! ;)

Thanks for the information and the quality, namaste :)

Haha, thanks for the comment :)

I suspect you won't be the last to fully jump ship from reddit to Steemit. Why do this stuff for free when you can make the same posts and get paid?

When Steemit communities come out, it's going to be even more glaring than now. Any subreddit can easily become a steem community.

I am literally a surgeon, and made it through 18 years of school with ah, a good % based rate of success.

I cannot figure out the format / purpose of reddit for the life of me, and have thus never joined.

Steemit is about 100000% easier.

It's going to dust reddit.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Steemit is like r/all used to be where you could browse through all new posts from all subreddits at once, giving everyone an equal chance at visibility for curators who are looking there.

No idea why they removed it.

Funnily enough, few hours ago uninstalled Reddit app too haha

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

dude imagine when we get ALLL the reddit POWER users to DITCH the slave ships of reddit for Steemit! liek steemit moses! guiding peopel top the land of low hanging crypto fruit! https://steemit.com/chainbb-general/@ackza/this-is-the-solid-state-society-oh-god-im-about-to-come-over-and-bring-1-million-redditors-over-here-from-rpics-rtrees-i-shall-march-and-bring-back-an-army

The amount of quality posts here just blow reddit out of the water right now. Part of that is because steemit is still relatively new but I feel like we are going to enjoy this golden age for a while.

I remember the quick discussion we had about Reddit and the ETC sub.

You are a power user with those karmas. Shows how much you love a good community.

So glad to have you on Steemit.

You probably already know many Redditors are complaining of these changes...

As usual: Reddit doesn't care! :D

I am pretty sure I will not be posting actively on Reddit anymore

I stopped after joining Steem. Two people miss me there. Lol. That is why I check Reddit time and time again.

But I invest all my time here. At least for now.

acidyo I've been one of your post followers for some time and I must say its great to have you on steem, its people like you who make this community enjoyable man. Good post. take care.

"They literally just submitted links across the internet onto Reddit for the sake of gaining Karma, as if it was Steem Power that actually has value."

This is something I have never understood. I have however heard that there is a market for trading Reddit accounts. High karma accounts can probably be sold for some amount of dollars, never took the time to investigate further.

By the way, do you know if karma will stay even if you delete the posts and comments they were made from?

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

By the way, do you know if karma will stay even if you delete the posts and comments they were made from?

It does, so yes, if you saw a comment or post of yours doing bad and getting downvoted you could just delete it out of existence.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

So these spammers could earn high amounts of karma with shitposts, then delete their history and sell the account forward.

I had to investigate now that we're talking about this -

  • 8 year verified 9500 link/15200 comment karma. Asking price = 130$
  • 22.2k post karma, 4.7 comment karma, 5yrs + verified email. Asking price = 90$
  • 250k post 280k comment karma many trophies, gold. Asking price = $1200

Interesting. Karma is worth something after all.

wow, and now that they combined them both its probably even better for their business... GG, reddit.

Yep, hard to believe it but it's true. People buy these to scam, spam and steer the discussion with. And I guess it can be a status symbol for some as well as Reddit is hitting the mainstream.

Ohh wow! you made it to the top. @acidyo

#65 but its more than enough! I just wanted to be able to see those 2 statistics since no other site offers them.

Absolutely. I agree. I love the insight you alway poured in Steemit platform

Yes, I noticed that earlier today as well.

Good rant, now you should go around spamming a link to this all around Reddit :)

I don't/haven't use/d reddit much, I just don't like its interface!

Steem beats reddit by a mile

@acidyo Thanks for your insight. It's wonderful to see someone take curation so seriously and is something I am working on. Also, I will be checking out the Steemdb site to see the statistics it offers.

Nice Karma there @acidyo and I know it can still be tough after 6 years working on a account but I feel steemit is where it is at, plus you get paid for doing something your good at.

Hi, I've seen some of your publications I'm going to follow, follow me and let's collaborate together =)

Sorry doesn't really work like that :p I go for natural growth

I think it's perfect, look at my blog and I sure some smile I steal

reddit had it's day, but steemit is the future for sure

Used to love reddit a while back; especially various soccer and music subreddits... I haven't been there in a while though. The new rules sound horrible... wth were they thinking?

Worst part is they didn't even warn me about it as I was creating my "profile page".

Cool...resteemed.

Good catch @acidyo

I never used Reddit, but your post helped me understand why more and more people have been switching to Steemit.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

It's been quite some time since I've paid any real attention to Reddit.

It's totally fine to be a bit braggy when you have justification!! You are totally the curator on steemit and it looks the stats are backing it up!! :0D

Reddit is where Imgur goes to find fun things to post. That is all... :)

ofc quit Reddit! Steemit is family! :D

Reddit: good for puns, cute cat videos, and being forced into a "safe space" where precious feelings can't be hurt. Disgusting. Well, the cats are cool, though.

i never understood the deal with karma, what's the whole point it's pretty much worthless, even if you wanna talk about rep, it's nothing like on the stack exchange sites or quora where rep actually counts and you can put it on your cv, linkedin etc

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Yup, plus it doesn't let you curate more efficiently if you have 100k more than someone else...

hmm, but curators ultimately get nothing, right?
or perhaps you could sell your account to someone who wants to control information flow

Curators get nothing. My vote is still just 1 upvote, someone with 100 bot accounts is 100x more efficient than me if he does it right. I don't get more karma for having voted up a good post early, I just get karma if others vote on my links/comments.

Thanks about that, be always to share like this!!!

So interesting! I never got into reddit. I knew what the Ask Me Anythings were, but that is about it. Do you think we could effectively do something like that on Steemit? Is there any value in that @acidyo?

nice....upvote and resteem for your post...
