Is It Fake or Real? Can We ever Believe What We See, Hear Or Watch?

Living in a time where there is so much digital processing around us, our tablets, laptops, PC’s… even down to our smartphones and all the apps they hold, we are now used to seeing digital manipulation of images and video in movies and advertising, and also in magazines and even Snapchat where we can transform or face into something else (a dog for example or maybe cute cat).

No this is not about Virtual Reality, it is about what we believe in this real reality.

Technology has enabled the possibility of being able to manipulate or fake any image, sound or video that we see, hear, or watch.

A software product called Face2Face developed at Stanford University is enabling digital manipulation of any person in a video by allowing another person to speak and the video to duplicate that speech as though it came from the person in the video.

This type of manipulation used to look very obviously fake however this is no longer true it can be very convincingly created as you can see demonstrated in a Youtube video below where Jimmy Kimmel becomes Mike Tyson and also becomes Karl Malone as well (the video is 6.20 minutes but worth watching)

Jimmy Kimmel becomes Mike Tyson & Karl Malone

This digital video manipulation has been used in Movies for a while but it is becoming more realistic and inexpensive, so much so that the type of alterations could be done as a form of attack against any public figure as a way to disseminate fake information or what is more commonly referred to as FakeNews.

Another video which is more informational than entertaining but again worth watching, runs for 8.00 minutes but you can see, hear and watch for yourselves just how freakishly realistic this manipulation can get.

This only going to become more of a threat to real reporting in the future, how do we decide what is real and what is not?

since the start of the digital era we have to start to question what we see or hear.
it is hard to really believe what we see or hear without seeking more info on it.

It really is amazing what can be done now with software to alter images and video. It's hard to decide what to believe in the media.
Thank you for your post.

Steem on beyond the moon, it will go way further than that. Good luck to us all.

Wow. The second video is quite impressive.

Yes there is a lot more detail about how they did their project. This is really FREAKY how realistic something so fake can be made to look.
