Why I Eat Banana Peels

Why Eating Banana Peels?

Like most other fruit skins, banana peels have more nutrients and fewer calories than the pulps. If you are watching calories, it is very beneficial to eat fruits with skins. Besides, there are certain nutrients contained in the skins, but not in the pulps.

Banana peel is a good source of potassium which helps in faster neuron impulses. Athletes involved in hard exercise may require larger quantities of potassium-rich foods. Newer evidence suggests that dietary potassium may play a role in decreasing blood pressure.

The fibrous part (cellulose) of banana peel helps clean the alimentary canal and prevents cholesterol accumulation in the walls.

Banana peels contain serotonin, a brain chemical for maintaining mood elevation. Banana peels also contain lutein, which is a powerful antioxidant important for eye health and helps prevent the retina of the eye from damage and degeneration.

Yet, many find banana peels taste awful and are unpleasant to eat. :(

('Ewww' is the right word if I have to chew banana peels one peel at a time and swallow them.)

I found the best way to enjoy them is using a bender to turn whole banana including peels into a delicious banana smoothie.

Ingredients

  • One ripe banana with peel (get an organic banana so it's free of chemicals)
  • One cup of soy milk (or milk)
  • Ice cubes
  • Honey (optional)
  • Slice of lemon or lime (optional)

What!!!!???? Lol
This makes complete sense!! My compost worms have been getting more benefit than i have been!!
It's there a certain stage or ripeness that improves the taste and blending of the peel? In your experience?
We use frozen bananas to make ice cream :) wondering how the peels would fare in that?

I use them right before they start to turn brown. If you freeze them, they'll turn into a brown color which doesn't look good but taste the same. Lemon or lime in the smoothie enhances the flavor and helps with the color not to turn brown. But I am not sure about ice cream. Maybe a little bit experiment. ;-)

Sounds yummy! Will have to try it with my own goats milk and honey soon. Thanks for sharing ^_^

Yummm ... goat milk and honey. Thank you for stopping by!

I have never eaten the peel. I know folks who tried to smoke the peel (that's a story for another time). But I now have a bunch that are ready to eat, so I will be making banana smoothies this weekend! Thanks for the info!

Interesting to learn that folks tried to smoke the peel. Let me know how banana smoothies turn out for you. Thank you for stopping by!

Too late! My son made one tonight! It was actually better than I anticipated. I have this thing for eating certain peelings. But this was fine.

Smoking banana peel... that reminded me of why I hated highschool. lol

I have never even considered eating the peel! You have opened my eyes today to possibilities I had not even realized I was ignorant to lol. Awesome content...thanks!

Thank you so much for your comment! It all started with the idea of looking at the food as a whole food and finding a way of eating it. I only eat banana peels in the smoothie. Not brave enough to chew on it. :-)

Well I think that's fair. That fuzzy tongue sensation isn't my favourite either :)

What??!!! Never knew it. Totally going to eat my banana peels now. Thanks for the tips and the great post!

You're very welcome. Let me know how it turns out for you.

I ruined my blender when I made paper... But I have a juicer. I wonder if that would work?

Making your own paper sounds very cool. I would like to learn more about it. Juicer would work, too. Personally, I don't use juicer because I want those fibers and additional nutrients to go through my body ;-)

Gottcha! I’m on the hunt for a new blender. :)
I’d love to make a post about making paper, but I’m on the hunt for a new blender. :)

well now that sounds like an awesome idea for a runner. I would not however be able to chew it. I would have to blend it and it would have to be organic for sure.

Once it's in a smoothie with the banana and peel, does it have a bitter aftertaste? Or is it not noticeable?

Amazingly, I can't taste a bitter aftertaste at all. Maybe it's just me. Please let me know if you do try it. Thank you.

Thank you! I love banana, too, and eat at least one every single day.
