Steemit Record Pool // Song Of The Day: "Cirrus" by Bonobo

in recordpool •  7 years ago  (edited)

I'm a longtime fan of DJ, musician and producer Bonobo (Simon Green), so it's only fair to dedicate my first Steemit Record Pool post to one of his tracks.

"Cirrus" was released by Bonobo in 2013 and is featured on his fifth studio album "The North Borders". Since it's release it has developed into being one of Bonobo's most popular and famous tracks.

The surreal video for the song manipulates footage from American Thrift, a public domain film from 1962 depicting American consumerism.

One of the instruments used by Bonobo in "Cirrus" is the Hang (drum), an instrument constructed from two half-shells of deep drawn, nitrided steel sheet. The Hang has become more popular in the electronica and downtempo music scene in recent years, with other producers also making use of the instruments' peculiar and mysterious sounds. Examples include Four Tet (Lush), Robot Koch (Eta Aquarid) and Mindseye (The Ocean)

Whether you call it Downtempo, Electronica, Ambient, Breakbeat or any combination of these genres, it's safe to say Bonobo creates unique soundscapes that have no equal...

I love this song and it's one of my favorite music videos in the world! I really need to catch Bonobo live..I didn't know that bit of information about the Hang drum, thanks for sharing that.

@mateonav53 You're welcome! Interestingly (or frustratingly) enough, I have also never seen him live yet. Whenever he's in the area, I'm always away! But one day it will happen...

Ah that's too bad. I tried catching his set at Coachella but you know how those things can go. Environmental conditions and proximity can play a larger role in who you actually see than who you really want to see!

Totally true. But by now I'm probably willing to travel quite a distance to see Bonobo! Pretty much at the top of my wishlist!

that'd be an adventure, hope you get to see him! There's still a couple artists I'm trying to catch. I'm a big fan of Above and Beyond and I'd love to see one of their landmark shows for their podcast, Group Therapy. They did it in Washington state at the end of last year but I couldn't make it out

I hope so too! Yeah that Above and Beyond show would be pretty special too. I've got Tycho on my list as well...and Jamie XX would be awesome as well.

Haven't caught a full set from tycho but I was lucky enough to catch Jamie, my god man he's a pro!!! just switches between genres so effortlessly and smooth. hope you get to see him too

I bet he is! I've seen a few of Jamie's live shows online and checked out some of his playlists of the shows he does. Very impressive... He's a big influence for me personally.

Great one! I was blessed to open up for Bonobo back in the day with my old group in Toronto, they're awesome!

You did?! No way man! What was the group called..?

We went by the name SMC aka Symbolik Music Crew.. Here's an old clip from out concept shows we used to do

That looks like fun show! So there's no more SMC now...?

We had to disband when I moved to Malaysia. Other members moved around Canada and I'm pretty much the only one still active making music currently. One is doing VR, another is a Chef and another working in IT.. Life happens!

Life happens indeed! I guess quite often making music ends up being a life phase rather than a whole life. I'd love to do music full-time myself but currently that wouldn't work...

by no means am i full-time. had a hiatus for a while but I've got some new stuff recently released and another blockchain based project on the way!

It seems the blockchain way does have a lot of potential! I'm still figuring out how to best utilize it though...
