Interviews are nerve-racking enough but it can be even more stressful knowing that you could be accepting a bad job offer. Here are 7 interview red flags to look out for to help you avoid a bad job offer.

The hiring manager is unprepared for the interview

Everyone makes mistakes however if you see this happen in multiple stages of your interview or with a few of the different interviewers then you’ll want to take it seriously!

It may mean they are unprofessional or inexperienced with what it takes to conduct an interview; it can also tell you that they’re not serious enough. This is something for you to look out for and it’s probably best to look for a better opportunity.

High turnover

You can find out whether a company has a high turnover or not by doing your research before the interview through websites like glassdoor or Linkedin. Based on your findings you can make your decision from there.

Hiring manager not showing up without warning

If you’re faced with a situation where the interviewer doesn’t show up without any warning, then this can tell you that they don’t respect your time.

Given that you aren’t contacted to reschedule or are given an apology for wasting your time then you want to steer clear from an interview like this as your time is just as important as theirs.

Being asked to do unpaid work

There may be times when it makes sense for you’re to prove your worth like if you’re more junior or they’re looking for a specific skillset. However, if you’re asked to work in your own free time and its unpaid this can be a red flag especially if you take the job as it may become a regular occurrence.

They don’t ask you any questions

Not being asked any questions is a major red flag because what’s the point in an interview without them? Exactly there is no point. The reason why something like this might happen is usually either because they already have someone selected for the job or they just don’t understand how to conduct an interview properly.

Regardless of what the reason is for not being asked any questions, these kinds of companies are best avoided.

Not given the time to ask your own questions

You could have questions prepared that you were hoping to ask but aren’t given the opportunity to do so.

This should have alarm bells ringing in your head because if you did become one of their employees it tells you that your issues or considerations are very likely to be ignored.

Already negotiating salary

What are you making now? This could be one of the questions you get asked in an interview. This is definitely a red flag because this is giving the employer all the power and if they do take you on it could result in a lower salary than expected.

If you’re put into a situation like this you can come back with a salary range to avoid the negotiation of salary going badly.
